A unique, historic festival! The first edition of the North Sea Jazz Festival took place in 1976 in the Nederlands Congresgebouw in The Hague. Some numbers in those early days: six venues, three hundred artists and about nine thousand visitors. In this very first festival year internationally renowned jazz legends performed, such as Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz, as well as most Dutch avant-garde artists.
In the intervening years, the North Sea Jazz Festival has developed into a major international jazz event. Over the years the numbers have increased to: fifteen venues, approximately thirteen hundred artists and a visitors number that varies between sixty-five thousand and seventy thousand every year. Since 2006 the festival has found a new and more spacious location: Ahoy Rotterdam.
North Sea Jazz is known all over the world because of the many musical genres it has to offer, ranging from traditional New Orleans jazz, swing, bop, free jazz, fusion, avant-garde jazz and electronic jazz; to blues, gospel, funk, soul, R&B, hip hop, world beat and Latin. All of which are presented during a single weekend: 11, 12 and 13 July 2008.
Artists 2008: Herbie Hancock, Zuco103, Angie Stone, Jill Scott, Pat Matheny, Gino Vanelli, Roy Hargrove, Chaka Khan, Deodato, Frank McComb, Jose James, Soil&Pimp Sessions, Bobby McFerrin, Lizz Wright, Lou Donaldson, Lonnie Smith, Finn Peters, Bobby Hutcherson, Alicia Keys, Joe Jackson, Maceo Parker, Gnarls Barkley, Steve Kuhn, & Many More.

J.Rawls Presents: The Liquid Crystal Project II. The Liquid Crystal Project is a figment of J.Rawls imagination. For al long time, he had this vision of a different type of jazz and hip-hop fusion. Call this version, Jazz-Hop, because it is jazzy with all the element of hip-hop inside it. It’s most evident in the drums! The boom-bap- of hip-hop from is present: the smoothness of jazz is present. This is something for the thirty-somthing cats that yearn for a more mature music. We grew up on hip-hop and live for the boom-bap, but we don’t really have the tolerance for the nonsense most rappers are talking about today. This is for the hip-hop connoisseur that can appreciate good hip-hop merged with a touch of jazz. The Liquid Crystal Project. J.Rawls ”Available August 2008″

The Hawthorne Headhunters is a project made up of the individuals; Stoney Rock, Ced No and Proh Mic. The project was conceived in Ced’s Studio in that special place between Long Beach and Los Angeles – Hawthorne, California. The St. Louis natives Ced and Veto, and Seattle transplant, Proh Mic locked it down under the shine of Hollywood Park and created some sounds in the great traditions of musical heavyweight projects such as Funkadelic, Headhunters, Soulquarians, Native Tongues Posse and Bloomfield, Kooper, Stills’ Super Session. Crossing the lines between the Southern influenced tastes of the producer/singer/rapper Stoney Rock, keyboard and studio controller Ced No, fused with the next level northern bounce of rapper/producer Proh Mic, the HH’s is at the crossroads of funk, soul, jazz and hip hop from players already years deep into the game. Look for the album to drop later this year on the new HVW8 records imprint.

It’s frankly weird that an artist like Q-Tip, with his long and succesfull history, innovation and sheer quality should end up without a label after the fiasco that arose from releasing his frankly brilliant and highly bootlegged Kamal The Abstract album that there you go. So here is a Q-Tip album, not a finished bells and whistles album but a mixtape that basically follows up on the kind of material he was doing as Kamal. It’s excellent, a mixture of Ummah style neo abstract jazz-funk pieces, old school Tribe called quest beat, boom bip and the intelligence you expect from Q-Tip.
It’s grown up hip hop with an ear for the richness of black music – jazz funk and psychedelic rock all feature heavily in the music, with high quality artists, such as Andre 3000, Busta Rhymes, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu and others. Get it on WarpMart.
