hypnoticbrassensemble1

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is eight brothers from the south side of Chicago, all sons of the Sun Ra trumpeter Philip Cohran — a street-marching brass band in the New Orleans tradition; jazz to dance, with a funk sensibility honed by hip hop. Here are two scorchers from the imminent album. Written by Philip Cohran in memory of Alyo Tolbert, star dancer for the Montu Dance Company in Chicago, Alyo is its hardest, funkiest track (with Malcolm Catto from The Heliocentrics on drums); and in memory of the band’s friend and rabblerouser. One pressing only, in metallic ink sleeve.

And no this is not a free download, although it is the best8,50 I’ve spent in a long time. Maybe even better than the 8 I spent at Little Italy this afternoon. And believe me that pizza was damn good. Pepperoni,  mushrooms, paprika, cheese, tomato sauce..Now go and get your copy of “Alyo/Flipside” at Rushhour.

muhsinah-plan-b

Ever since “The Oscillations: Sine” it’s been a bit quiet around DC’s hottest female vocalist. Muhsinah explained us that this is an oldie and nothing ever actually happened with “Plan B”. We thought this Kev Brown Mix was way too nice to just remain on the shelves for an eternity. Bilal Salaam supposedly did a remix too, but we haven’t heard that one yet. Mad shout outs to Rehes and Muhsinah for this one. Don’t forget to buy miss Sinah’s music HERE!

big-pooh-north-american-pie

Yesterday Rapper Big Pooh released the “North American Pie” version of “Delightful Bars” after having released the “Candy Apple” version via iTunes last in March. Now “Reality Check” is a Khrysis produced track off the new version that I really really love featuring Big Dho, D-Black & Mykestro. Thanks to OnSmash and support Big Pooh by buying his album HERE.

So much good music, so little time! It happens to the best of us…we often sleep on artists or specific songs for many reasons. We would like to use “Slept on Sundays” as a weekly reminder and it can also be an eye-opener for us. Every Sunday we’ll be introducing you to either a slept on artist, album or song (whether it be an exclusive, b-side or soundtrack exclusive).

For us it’s nice to be able to dig back a little and off course we’d love you to send us music for Slept on Sundays as well! Don’t be shy, but don’t be sending us your demo tapes or nothing. That’s not what this is about. Let us know what you think of these weekly posts and don’t be shy…we’d like to hear your honest opinion.

A couple of months ago I stumbled onto this new soul singer called Anam Owili-Eger and I thought he sounded a bit like Donnie – who happens to have dropped one of my all time favorite albums “The Colored Section” – and I checked out his album “These Subtle Declarations” which had a couple of nice songs on it. The best track on there is our first Slept on Sundays post so enjoy!

dela-are-you-in

After such a long time I’m happy to announce that De La is finally back with a new album. I was fortunate enough to meet Posdnuos a couple of years ago and these guys are so humble after more than two decades of making wonderful, concious music. Unfortunately this album is a continuous mix and after five years of waiting I personally hoped for a lot more. On the other hand…it’s a collaboration with Nike+ and was made to enhance your running experience.

I’m not here to tell ya’ll how dope De La Soul is. Nor am I going to tell you the details concerning how this album was created. I just want to tell you to go listen to the music for yourself and buy the “Are You In?” album on iTunes if you decide you like it. We wanted to give you guys a taste so here are the two dopest songs.
