New music by Gu Zheng performer Bei Bei and Ubiquity producer Shawn Lee marries a unique blend of ancient tradition with studio trickery and spiritual jazz. This uplifting, genre-bending, soundclash recalls the afrocentric harping of Dorothy Ashby, the hypnotic style of Alice Coltrane, and the organic electronics of Four Tet and Quantic.
For this introductory, limited edition 10″ EP, ubiquity includes the original and instrumental versions of “Make Me Stronger”, with a vocal by Georgia Anne Muldrow who has recently produced and sang on records by Mos Def and Erykah Badu (she is also working on a solo record for Ubiquity.) Alongside these, is a storming version of the Billy Paul psychedelic soul opus “East”. And a remix by UK producer Floating Points (whose “Love Me Like This”, “Vacuum Boogie”, and “Radiality” releases have been turning heads all year long) takes the track deep into FP vs. Wu-Tang territory. Check out the version on Bei Bei’s myspace page. It’s a lengthier track and it makes the song… I was able to get a clearer understanding from listening to that one…

Interesting piece. Georgia’s music may be “different” Rice you might be missing more than what meets the ears. Georgia’s tracks are off key at times but I think that is intentional not to conform to any type of music standard. In a sense it becomes a standard but it’s her standard. Often, music is limited by the confines of standards but most artist expand and develop as a person as their music will usually reflect that growth. Often people tend to listen to music in a very trained manner so it’s easy to miss what is said or trying to be conveyed thru the music. I’ve had to learn to slow down to pay attention myself. Let’s be open to see & hear all the things that one’s soul delivers. Her at the least is sincere and very personal.

Rice…Like DJ Jamad, I think you may be missing an important component in how Georgia Anne Muldrow delivers various vocal performances. What she was actually doing was something extremely complex and something that intelligent vocalists have the power to do, which is, bend her voice around the key and create her own “distortion”. Much the same way a keyboardist would do when using the distortion knob/roller on a keyboard when playing. Give the song another listen, and definitely listen to the original version. A closer look may give you a little more insight into the skills she’s displayed. This woman is extremely talented.
