TOKiMONSTA, the official first lady of Brainfeeder shows us that the current beatscene won’t be dominated by men only. TOKiMONSTA (Jennifer Lee) born and raised in the South Bay area of Los Angeles, was an unfocused pupil of classical piano. However, she has come to use this background to create vast textural soundscapes by utilizing live instruments, percussion, digital manipulation, and dusty vinyl. Through the creation of beats, she is able to fuse the sounds of the past with current music sensibilities into something advanced all while preserving old school vibes. Her live performance is exciting as well as astounding intricate using a laptop, drum pad, MIDI controller, and an analog Roland SP 404. She is fearless and energetic having performed with the likes of Flying Lotus, Daedelus, Nosaj Thing, Gaslamp Killer, and many other of her fellow beat makers. When we heard that Dam-Funk was coming over, MRP and me decided to get our funky strutt on and mix up a little Boogie/Funk mix. Enjoy these twentyfive minutes of pure, unadulterated Funk and get in the mood for Dam-Funk’s European tour. Our friends at Strange Fruit loved the idea and so we suggested this mix was to be used as a promotional mix for the Strange Fruit presents: Dam-Funk event, held on October 10th in Rotterdam. Thelonius & Lucky Dubz will be sound providers for the rest of the evenening so come one, come all and get ya boogie on!
