I remember visiting London for the first time when I was just 14. Me and the homie Mr. Speak jumped on a plane and went digging for records mainly. Most of the record stores we visited then, don’t exist anymore. Happy to still have those memories though. That Reggae shop was one of my favorite spots that trip and Mr Bongo was located in the same building if I remember correctly.
Now Mr Bongo recently launched their brand new website and online store. To celebrate this, they’ve put together a 10-track sampler containing the finest of the current Mr Bongo sound. They’re giving this away as a freebie via their Bandcamp page for the next 30 days…so hurry up and download.
Almost two decades later I still have love for Mr Bongo because they’ve been rereleasing some incredible albums from Brazil. They’re even in the process of launching their first venture within Brazil so we can expect even more beautiful exclusive music to come our way. The Stussy Make Beats Contest will be judged by Stussy, Low End Theory and Swedish synthesizer company, Teenage Engineering, who produced a new drum machine/synthesizer called the OP-1. The Make Beats contest invites the public to upload their own original tracks (made on any machine/computer) via the Stussy Make Beats Drop Box on Soundcloud. The contest will run until 9/14/11 and is open to everyone around the globe. All beats must be submitted by 9/14/11 to be considered for the contest. The winner will be announced on 9/20/11 and will receive the release of their EP, paid travel to Los Angeles to perform at the Low End Theory event, a Teenage Engineering OP-1 portable synthesizer and a box of fresh Stussy gear. We are happy to introduce this fresh vocalist Taprikk Sweezee, who was born in Berlin and is now living/working in Hamburg. He has a small label called Zoikmusic and released his “Conversea” EP last year. On his new “Poly” EP he works with producers such as Busy (USA), E.A.R.L (Netherlands) and HBO (France). As far as the sound goes…this EP is really all over the place. I hear some futuristic funk, nu soul, glitch and many other influences on here. Our personal favorite has to be “Newend”. Vocal sweetness combined with electronic mayhem…that’s what’s up. Look out for the EP to drop later this month and in case you’d like to pre-order visit Boomkat. More buy links will follow.

It’s an honour and a pleasure to be a part of something as good as BIRDFEST in Rotterdam. Three straight days of bands, film and a sick line-up of DJ’s all related to Jazz & Soul music. Thursday (Oct. 7th) you can enjoy the documentary Still Bill: The Movie plus the sounds of the Analog DJ’s (Miss D & Ozzi B). Friday (Oct. 8th) a Red Bull Music Academy Info Session with Norman Jay will take place followed by “Goodtimes: The Movie”.
On Saturday (Oct. 9th) Moovmnt presents: Timeless “A Suite for Ma Dukes”. This will be the premiere in the Netherlands so all you Dilla heads, music lovers and whatnot…RAISE IT UP! In case you have no clue what we’re talking about please check this preview of what is in store. Afterwards Kaidi Tatham & Benji B are going to make a ruckus at so you know what time it is.

Onra asked us to post this on our website, because he is looking for cover art for his upcoming “Chinoiseries Pt. 2″. He decided to hold a contest and kinda ‘pre-chopped’ some images if you will. See this as him handing you some relevant samples and asking you to chop it up into some music. Now I know there are some graphic designers out there that will love this idea of ‘samples’ being chosen for them to work with and I think it’s a good idea to get on the same page. For all you graphic designers that would like to give it a try, HERE is the download link to the zip file containing everything you need.
Now the assignment is simple. Onra is asking you guys to design front and back covers for vinyl. Including the circles on the vinyl (4 of them, as it’s a double vinyl release). The winner wins a few records and CD’s from Onra’s discography…authographed if needed plus a free T-shirt. Since the record is going to be out late 2011, your deadline is October 31st.

Timeless is finally in a store near you and to celebrate this occasion VTech and Mochilla have come together for an amazing once in a lifetime event. On June 18th, live on stage at the historic Los Angeles Theatre Center, they present Arthur Verocai LIVE! He’s coming all the way from Rio de Janeiro with an all-star 12-piece band, while I’ll be coming all the way from Amsterdam with the homie Marcelo. Hopefully we arrive in L.A. hours before the show, but no matter what I have to see this.
FYI….this event is FREE!! All you have to do is go to www.mochilla.com and follow the instructions. The sign-up page will go live tomorrow night (June 10th) at midnight and will come down on Friday night at the same time. Like we told ya’ll last week, Stüssyand Stones Throw Records are releasing a tribute shirt in memoriam of Dilla. You already know the when and where if you’re a frequent visitor, so here’s something you didn’t know. The shirt was officially licensed by the J Dilla Estate and in case you are in Amsterdam this Saturday, we urge you to drop by ‘Café de Duivel’ for the Stüssy x Dilla Tribute Night. DJ’s FS Green, Turne, SP and Edzon will be spinning the illest of the illest in honor of the late J Dilla. Major props to the guys at Patta for puting this whole thing together by the way.
