The Hawthorne Headhunters is a project made up of the individuals; Stoney Rock, Ced No and Proh Mic. The project was conceived in Ced’s Studio in that special place between Long Beach and Los Angeles – Hawthorne, California. The St. Louis natives Ced and Veto, and Seattle transplant, Proh Mic locked it down under the shine of Hollywood Park and created some sounds in the great traditions of musical heavyweight projects such as Funkadelic, Headhunters, Soulquarians, Native Tongues Posse and Bloomfield, Kooper, Stills’ Super Session. Crossing the lines between the Southern influenced tastes of the producer/singer/rapper Stoney Rock, keyboard and studio controller Ced No, fused with the next level northern bounce of rapper/producer Proh Mic, the HH’s is at the crossroads of funk, soul, jazz and hip hop from players already years deep into the game. Look for the album to drop later this year on the new HVW8 records imprint.

It’s frankly weird that an artist like Q-Tip, with his long and succesfull history, innovation and sheer quality should end up without a label after the fiasco that arose from releasing his frankly brilliant and highly bootlegged Kamal The Abstract album that there you go. So here is a Q-Tip album, not a finished bells and whistles album but a mixtape that basically follows up on the kind of material he was doing as Kamal. It’s excellent, a mixture of Ummah style neo abstract jazz-funk pieces, old school Tribe called quest beat, boom bip and the intelligence you expect from Q-Tip.

It’s grown up hip hop with an ear for the richness of black music – jazz funk and psychedelic rock all feature heavily in the music, with high quality artists, such as Andre 3000, Busta Rhymes, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu and others. Get it on WarpMart.

Shawn Jackson’s latest project, “First of All…” is a highly anticipated album that aims to satisfy true fans that feel a void within quality hip hop music. The album is a wonderful balance of sounds which features artists such as Guilty Simpson (Stones Throw Records), Ty of Ty & Kory, Double K (People Under the Stairs), Ta’Raach (C.R.A.C.), Beloved, and Comel of the group Time Machine. It’s balance and well rounded features give listeners something that is often missing from hip hop, and further proves that Shawn Jackson is one of the strongest MCs in the game to date. His swagger, rhyme play, and well thought out content sets a high standard for those that choose to follow. released on Tres Records. Buy This..

Leon Ware born 16th February 1940, Black Bottom, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.

During his youth he had an accident with a slingshot and caught himself in the eye leaving him totally blind for two years. Consequently, Leon was sent to the Fitzgerald School For The Blind, which, incidentally, is the same school that Stevie Wonder was sent to. Leon was one of several Motown Records producers who gained their first experience of the industry in the mid-50’s doo-wop group the Romeos, whose line-up included the legendary, Lamont Dozier.

He wrote the majority of Ike And Tina Turner’s ‘Nuff Said’ in 1970, before rejoining Motown and co-writing Michael Jackson’s 1972 hit ‘I Wanna Be Where You Are’ with T-Boy Ross, brother of Diana Ross.

Ware re-emerged as a vocalist in 1973, when he was featured on Quincy Jones’s ‘Body Heat’. With T-Boy Ross, he then began work on a romantic song-cycle, intending it to be his own solo debut.Instead, Motown boss Berry Gordy persuaded Ware to give the songs to Marvin Gaye, in return for being allowed to produce the superstar.

The result was the delicate and tender ‘I Want You’, one of Gaye’s finest artistic achievements.

This exposure enabled Ware to launch his own career with the acclaimed ‘Musical Massage’.

Leaving Motown in 1978, he enjoyed minor US hits in 1979 and 1981 with ‘What’s Your Name?’ and ‘Baby Don’t Stop Me’, in the same heavily produced, lush style that he had fashioned for Gaye.

He has worked, written or produced material for artists as diverse as: Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Norman Connors, The Main Ingredient, Average White Band, Donny Hathaway, Bobby Womack, Rufus, Minnie Riperton…in short, you name a soul band and Leon Ware has had some involvement at one stage! Daedelus is the name under which Los Angeles-based electro-musician Alfred Darlington makes music. Love to Make Music To is his first album for Ninja Tune. Darlington describes the album as “the imaginary memory of a time that never was” and a “drug/love record.” Guests are aplenty on Love. They include Paperboy, members of the Sa-Ra Foundation, Laura Darling (who just so happens to be Darlington’s wife), and producer Michael Johnson, who has worked with the Lilys and Holopaw. johnzeis@prefix.
