Multi-talented singer/songerwriter/actress Sy Smith is back with her fourth album called “Fast And Curious” released on her own label Psyko Records. The album was entirely produced and co-written by Mark de Clive-Lowe. This right here is a nice fusion of soulful house, broken beat and downtempo electronic soul. Fellow soul singer, Rahsaan Patterson, joins Sy on her interpretation of Billy Ocean’s boogie banger “Nights” (Feel Like Getting Down), but one of our favorites is “Teena”. One of those albums you have to give a listen and buy on Bandcamp if you decide it’s worth it.

Eventhough we never met J-1 in person, I did have a few words with him back and forth online. He seemed like a real cool cat and his passing was kind of a shock to us. Not that shocking is to see how much he was loved. The song “Castles” was was written by Jimetta Rose for Jovan Coleman aka J-1 THE DEER. The music was produced by House Shoes, taken originally from the Starship 27 Vol. 2 “Take Off” compilation on INsect Records. All the proceeds go J-1′s family so if you haven’t copped it yet, go get the compilation now on or the bonus track “Castles” via Bandcamp.

So I got an email from Dean from Darker Than Wax (Singapore) informing me about their latest release from Midnight Runners. So Blu drops this new “UCLA” album out of the blue. It’s entirely produced by Madlib and you gotta love the cover! The quality of this release is incredibly poor though. Almost started to doubt whether this release is official or not. There’s only 2 songs on there that stand out and the overall quality of the vocal recordings is horrible. Dunno if this is worth $15 to you guys, but if you’d like to buy this visit this Bandcamp page. So it seems Stones Throw pulled this one of the net saying this is not a Blu X Madlib collaboration project.

Myele Manzanza, aka the quirky kiwi with the drumsticks, has not only held down the drums as part of Wellington’s Electric Wire Hustle for the past 3 years.
