Next month Black Milk’s highly anticipated “Album of The Year” is due to hit streets. Other than the heavy contributions from both members of his live band (vocalist/keyboardist AB and drummer Daru Jones), the album exclusively features players and vocalists from his hometown of Detroit. Vocalist Melanie Rutherford, bassist Tim Shellaberger, and the versatile horn player and string arranger Sam Beaubien (who arranged horns and strings on Mayer Hawthornes “A Strange Arrangement”) are just a few names. Peep the latest “Deadly Medley” video featuring Royce Da 5′9 and Elzhi and pre-order the CD via Fatbeats while you’re at it.
“This is not an original beat of mine…..I just added a few bass and string joints in there and mostly mixed it. The melody including a few samples is a cover of Devonwho’s original “Actriz” from his beat CD “Funraiser Vol. 1: Thumbtracks”. As for the drums, those are originally Black Milk’s from his “Purple Rain” Beat CD. And of course I had to spice some Dilla in it…..I just wanted to see how two of my favorite joints would sound together”. – NAMELESS

29-year-old beatsmith Apollo Brown reps the D and comes with a very recognizable style on his latest “The Reset” album. In 2009 he won the Detroit Red Bull Big Tune Championships and competed in the national finals. Apollo then signed as a producer with the Mello Music Group last December.
Up till now he has released the “Skilled Trade” (2007) and the “Make Do” (2009) Beat Tapes. Those made collaborations possible with Detroiters Finale, Danny Brown and Kam Moye aka Supastition. On “The Reset” he gets some help from Rapper Big Pooh, Black Milk, Declaime, Buff 1, MED, Grap Luva, John Robinson, Kenn Starr, Oddisee and Diamond District.
There’s definitely some nineties influences to be heard on this album, like “Lower The Boom” getting into that Wu-Tang vibe or “Ghetto Soul Music”. I suggest you give this one a listen and in case you want to BUY it head on over to

Finally some new soul ish! I remember the new classic soul movement being huge early 2000, but nowadays we sadly have to settle with an occasional album.
