For those unaware it all started out when Black Spade moved to the west and met fellow producer Proh Mic at the Do-Over in LA. They hit it off from the bat and soon brought in I,Ced. Ced was living in Hawthorne California at the time thus the Hawthorne Headhunters collective were born. When Coultrain also joined, the group released their debut EP in 2009 with HVW8. Along the way a lot has changed and Proh Mic and Ced decided to go their own way and persue a solo career. Black Spade and Coultrain recorded their “Myriad of Now” album which will be released next year on Plug Research and has lots of elements of hip hop, soul, funk, pop and electronic influences. It speaks on spirituality, sexuality and everything in between. You might remember us posting “Teleport” of of the “If You Were My Baby” single. Next up is their fresh 5-track EP which is available on as of today.

One of our favourite MC’s from L.A. – Dom Kennedy – just dropped a brand new FREE album entitled “From The Westside With Love” which consists out of 16 tracks. Cali-based DJ Seano was hanging out with a few buddies (Cook Classics, JKim, Inka One and Greg The Dude) while the room filled with smoke. Meanwhile Seano did a 1-take mix and this is the result. This is some Jazz/Breaks/Funk shit with a lot of samples/originals. It was aired on a local radio station (Soundwaves Radio) and Seano wanted to share it with anybody who might be interested. Although it’s not your avarage Moovmnt post, it’s the foundation of a lot of modern day music and we grew up on this shit. So we thought you’d might like something slighty different for a change. Later today we’ll be dropping a little mix of our own, so we won’t leave you hungry while we’ll be on our way to London. RBMA here we come..

This young Californian is currently studying sound audio and I truly love the way “Day Two” sounds. To my surprise there’s a lot more where this came from. Mr. Lewis dropped his “Talking Chairs”beat tape HERE for FREE and if you take the time to visit his Bandcamp, you’ll find lots more audible goodies there! Most intriguing I find this triology where feelings come gliding across that synthesizer as if it was nothing…I’m really feeling this a lot! Ya boy P just hit me up on the mail with a bangin’ ass video shot by TheComeUpTv. The LAx Paperboys held their 4th Annual Holiday Party at Jane’s House in Hollywood, CA. As you can see in the video Rob Roy, Dom Kennedy & Pac Div held it down with performances as DJ Sean G kept the party live. What a way to end the year…stay COOL.
Once in a while an artist manages to take me back into time. Recently it was Cali’s Fashawn that reminded me of the Pharcyde a lot…and I do mean got me suffering from flashbacks and shit. This week I was introduced to Polyester the Saint for the first time. When listening to his typical west coast jams, it got sucked into a vortex of some sort. I suddenly found myself in another time somewhere in the mid nineties. It was this period in time that had always stuck with me througout my life, cuz it was feel good Hip Hop. Shit was laidback, funky, care free and a whole lot more. Stop what you’re doing for brief moment and go listen to Poly’s music. Doesn’t this remind you of cats like Domino with his “Sweet Potatoe Pie” or “Getto Jam”? Anyhow…enough with the sentimental ish. We just wanted to let the world know about this west coast musician who breathes new life in to Hip Hop while spreading messages of peace, unity and love.
After attending Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA, Polyester (aka Christian St. James Cleveland) would immediately begin to work closely with notable greats such as Chaka Khan and Stevie Wonder, E-40 and Too Short. Poly would then join forces with partner Louis Brown IV, forming production team, Los Angeles Unified Sound District or LAUSD. In 2009 the duo would receive worldwide recognition with the release of “LAUSD Presents: Curly Tops And Nautica Jackets”, which was distributed on major Hip Hop blogs across the country and landed #5 on BET’s must have CD’s of 2009.
With a Funk heart, a Jazz spirit and a Hip Hop structure, his sound represents a mixture of G-Funk and Hip Hop and is mostly sample-based. He has already performed with J’DaVeY and Taz of SA-RA Creative Partners. Currently he’s working on a compliation album with the likes of Pac Div, Dom Kennedy, U-N-I, Diz Gibran. Keep your greedy little eyes on the lookout for the “Hellagood presents: Polyester The Saint” album, which is yet to be released. Poly’s is currently also working on a brand new album “Peace Love Unity Respect” which is still in the making.
