In 2009 the first mothership landed. Starship 27 was filled with musical crazyness and curated by J1. Shortly after the first compilation album was released, the eclectic Texas label iNsect Records, got in contact with him and talked about a possible follow-up. A few years later “Starship 27 Vol. 2: Take Off” returns with J1 again as it’s curatorial captain, guiding the spacecraft on its musical voyage. On board we find artists such as DaM-FunK, I-Ced, Dibia$e, P.U.D.G.E., Devonwho, House Shoes, Eric Lau, Computer Jay, Ras-G, Blackspade & Coultrain (and more). For those wondering why this unexplained phenomenon is called the Starship 27. J1 replied, “the secret to the name will be revealed on the 3rd installment of the trilogy…next year”. So stay tuned, mark the 29th on your calendar and get ready for some heavyweight beats.

I remember buddy Bravo telling me about DâM-FunK hitting him up for some exclusives for this mix he was doing for Mary Anne Hobbs. A month later here it is and at the same time we say farewell to Mary Anne as she is leaving BBC1 for good. Of course a lot of unreleased music from Ad Bourke, Teeko, B. Bravo and the master of Funk himself. So sit back and enjoy this “The Future Sound of Modern Funk” mix and download it HERE.

Today we visited HVW8 and bumped into Ty and Computer Jay’s girlfriend. Afterwards I-Ced and Black Spade (Hawthorne Headhunters) dropped by and we had a few beers and a whole lot of laughs. Really like this picture I took of them and Anthony Valadez. While he’s listening to and chopping up some Miguel Atwood-Ferguson piano play, I’m writing this. Thank you L.A. for anoher great day!
Now I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is that the guys from HVW8 are sharing this Master Blazter mix full of unheard goodies from Dam-Funk, Computer Jay and J1. The bad news is that I was hoping to hear some actual Master Blazter material, but alas. Another bit of bad news for me personal is that I’m gonna miss them perform live in San Francisco at the Mezzanine July 1st. That evening I fly back to L.A. so I guess I’m shit outta luck.
Three musicians with their own distinctive styles have come together to form Master Blazter. Each individual is an integral part of the whole – each one necessary to keep funk music alive, taking it to unforeseen heights. Los Angeles’ very own DJ Kutmah is responsible for mixing it all up into one funked up mix and I’d like to thank HVW8 for steadily bringing out good music and for the goodies you guys sent us recently!
Whilst cruisin’ the web, I came across this live footage of Dam-Funk‘s “Killdat” with the entire Master Blazter crew. Now this is what we’ve been wanting to see! Some live ass shit with Computer Jay on the keys, J1 on the drums and homegirl JIMIJAMES on the vocals. Bring that shit over to Amsterdam my friends…we’re ready for that ish!!
REPOST: Last summer our buddy Computer Jay was so nice to share this crazy Mike Slott ReWerk for “Maintian”. Just received an email from Jay and it’s officially out on Ramp Records! Head on over to Boomkat to make a PURCHASE and listen to some low quality streams below. Oh and we still feenin’ for some Master Blazter..

Last summer I was introduced to L.A.-based JimiJames with her sexy sounds. I really liked her 2nd “So Janky” album and I still have to check out her debut album soon. Her style is best described as poppy combined with some soulfulness, R&B and Hip Hop (or as she describes it ‘Grittipop’). She reminds me a bit of J*DaVeY, but just on a couple of tracks. She’s did the vocals on Hawthorne Headhunters‘ “She Wanna” and performs with Master Blazter from time to time (HVW8 up in this one). Kinda late pass I know, but I wanted to introduce this foxy lady anyway before she truly blows up. Really feeling “Bitchin’” produced by Karriem Riggins and “Already Done” is also quite nice.

To end the year properly, we came up with the idea to sum up 2009 and let ya’ll know what we thought was epic and who ya’ll slept on. We would like to thank you all for staying loyal to the movement called Moovmnt and 2010 has a lot of newness in store for you. Our brand new website will launch early Januari, the Moovmnt Sampler releases will be dropping like hotcakes and Moovmnt TV is coming up.
Our Belgian homeboy Azer did a 2009 mix and it goes hard as you might guess. It’s a selection of some of his favorite tracks released in 2009. It was broadcasted on December 30, 2009 in the Laid Back Show on FM Brussel. Happy new year and see you on the flipside.
