j1

My mans J1 just hit us up via the mail to share some music and knowledge with us. Now Jay is one busy motha and will be dropping 1. a new EP with his homeboy Colin Brown, 2. a mixtape with his band Master Blazter (which consists of Dam-Funk, Computer Jay and J1) and 3. a breakbeat album called “Breakbeat Jones” strictly for producers with drum loops, single kicks, snares and all kinds of percussion. Be on the look for all this and a bag of chips.

In celebration of Flying Lotus‘s birthday, ArtDontSleep put together another heavy impromptu jam session in the Echo Park area of Los Angeles. This 30 minute take from the jam session features some heavy hitter producers and musicians, including Flying Lotus himself, Exile, Shafiq Husayn (SA-RA), Stephen ‘Thundercat’ Bruner (Erykah Badu, SA-RA), Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (Suite for Ma Dukes), Computer Jay (Master Blazter) and many others.

Also, many of these cats will be featured on the upcoming CMJ Showcase on October 21st at Crash Mansion. Homeboy Deluge will be attending and might keep you guys up to date about what’s poppin’ in NY. Check out the sick line-up on the flyer. From all these musicians to you, enjoy the joint entitled “Happy Birthday, Flying Lotus”.

When Computer Jay told us he was invited by the guys from BD to do his live set at the Viral Radio X Beat Dimensions release party tomorrow, I was kinda psycked. I’ve seen some footage online and can’t wait to check out Jay and his electronic alter ego perform live. Not only will local heroes Cinnaman & Juha be playing, but you can expect a whole lot of dopeness from Danny Breaks (UK), Jay Scarlett and Jay of course! Lets hope he brings some of that LA sunshine to the Trouw building in Amsterdam. In case you didn’t know…go check it out.

The song I Should Tell Ya Momma on You was originally recorded behind the HVW8 Art + Design Gallery in December 2008. This raw video was posted on YouTube and became an instant online phenomenon. Equal parts G-funk, California Soul and Hobo Street, the song features full musical accompaniment created only by Red. The natural funk and flow struck a chord with an international audience representing a true Cali sound. In this era of T-Pain and excess studio production, the video showcased an almost forgotten musical form with no auto-tune or talk-box, only the beating of his chest and the hum of his throat as a bass kick and snare, and highlighted by signature vocals and original rhymes, this was Red – The Man Without The Machine. Get the EP via iTunes and let us know which version is doper…the original one or the Dam-Funk remix? For the full read go to the HVW8 website…one love to Ty G and the HVW8 fam!

LA_Jam

One more reason for every musician to move to LA. Last week there was a private jam session in a secret location in downtown LA..with an amazing line-up. Mark de Clive-Lowe on juno 6, radias, mpc3000, Shafiq Hussain from Sa-Ra Creative Partners on his juno, Computer Jay on his rhodes and 3 moogs, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on his violin, Zap Mama and LA fam on vocals, Todd Simon on trumpet..and more. The actual jam itself was pulled together by Dru from Artdontsleep and was documented on video, pics and audio. Below is a cut of the whole jam. Big ups to Mark de Clive, Computer Jay and Artdontsleep..

master-blazter-1

Already these guys are my favourite band of 2008/2009. Computer Jay, J-1 and Dam-Funk took it up another notch with a “more funk than jazz” Super Session recorded live at the HVW8 Art + Design. It was the first time these cats played together as a group and thus Master Blazter was born.

Now I think this hour long improv shit is sicker than chemotherapy! So if you love Dam Funk solo, you’re most definitely going to love the “HVW8 International Podcast, Vol. 2″ (watch the video after the jump). One love to L.A.’s Computer Jay, Ty G and the whole HVW8 fam!

Introducing to you…Computer Jay from the always sunny Los Angeles. A moog freak by nature with a sound derived from dusty old synths but sounding oh so fresh. Greatness in the making I say! Big ups to our friends at HVW8 for some solid info and the footage from the Idyllwild Arts Academy celebrating Black History.

I just talked to Jay on AIM and here’s some additional info for ya’ll. Support good music and buy his single “Distance” with “Epiphany” on the flipside on iTunes!

Yes Yes Y’all celebrates their one year anniversary with a special podcast, it’s more a “Thank U” than a celebration, but we surely think this fine blog deserves a celebration.  The download is a full package with a cd, full booklet and bonus material, which are all worth mentioning. The main tracklist contains mainly names that were unfamiliar to us (how is it possible?!) but we’re glad to get to know them. But the bonus (beat)tape also has our favourite producers (FS Green, Hayzee, FullCrate & SirOJ) from here in Amsterdam on it. So whatever else u do on here, we don’t care, but make sure you download this wonderful freebie….And oh yeah, don’t forget to keep checkin’ out YYY,  we will be doing sum guest posts on there as well in the near future.

Big Ups to the fam at YYY for this tape and the design which is off the chain as usual!

Download!
