Last week me and the homie Mr. Speak were just hanging out and decided to put together this “The Future of Funk” mix. It’s a well known fact I like that Modern Funk so I thought it was only fitting to share my love with the rest of the world. Did my best to get some exclusives in there together with a healthy dose of that bomb funk. Today would’ve been Dilla‘s birthday and it’s hard to imagine it has been almost five years already since his passing? Still Dilla‘s legacy lives on in many ways. Not only did B.Kyle release his “Still Shining” documentary…there’s more. Ma Dukes and The J Dilla Foundation recently announced the winner of ‘The International J Dilla Tribute Art Contest’. NY artist Joe Buck won the contest with his winning “J Dilla the SpeciaLIST” design. This signed, limited edition print, as well as special lithograph poster and t-shirt are exclusively available for sale at www.art4dilla.com. All proceeds will be donated to The J Dilla Foundation to help fund their ongoing programs.
Last, but not least all Dutch Dilla heads are welcome to join us at the “Dilla Lives” tribute event (flyer after the jump) at the Bitterzoet in Amsterdam this Sunday. DJ’s Turne, FS Green, SirOJ and Deluge (initiator) will be playing Dilla minded music all through the night and of course all proceeds go to the J Dilla Foundation as well. Raise it up!
A few weeks ago I was given the opportunity to give 3 people a Samsung tablet and have them execute an experiment with it. Having seen what Oh No’s capable of with an iPad, I immediately thought of putting my man I.N.T. (La Melodia) to work on a beat. Together with Nilez, we then picked Mar to lay some of his smooth vocals over this banger. I may be biased but I gotta say the guys outdid themselves on this one. Good friend and fellow Amsterdam resident Full Crate just blessed us with a sick variation he did a while back. He’s been a Def Jam Poetry fan for years and was missing the element of music in many occasions. For this reason he decided to take Floetry‘s “Fantasise” and make his own variation, which turned out mighty fine if I may say so. Peep the original after the jump and get an idea of what Crate started out with. I’m hoping he’s dropping more goodness like this, because let’s face it…everybody loves a freebie like this. Last month we met up with Soulquarian Bilal after his show in Amsterdam (Paradiso) and behold the result. Our camera man Joao couldn’t make it, so me and Deluge decided to shoot the video ourselves on his Canon 550D. Big thank you for editing it though and I think it came out pretty nice, because Bilal goes pretty deep.
As you might know his album “Airtight’s Revenge” (Plug Research) is coming out in a month and today his first single “Restart” drops. Earlier this year we had the chance to be a part of the Red Bull Music Academy, which took place in London this year. We tried to live the life of a participant and also brought our video camera along. You might come to the conclusion we are not very skilled videographers (yet), but nevertheless we wanted to share some of the footage we shot in London.
Today was marked in many agenda’s already, because it’s the official release date of the ‘RBMA Various Assets 2010′ compilation album. SirOJis back on the block and this time it’s “Castlevenia” that gets re-released on Organik Recordings together with the brand new b-side “Flip It Back”. UK massive in the house. This Friday our big buddy TY and RBMA-ninja Kidkanevil are going to perform in the upstairs room of Amsterdam’s Paradiso. We were asked to host the evening and of course we said yes. MOOVMNT at PARADISO starts of with TY who’ll be performing a lot of new material of his brand new “Special Kind of Fool” album. To bring the transition from Hip Hop to more electronic styles of music, the little homie Jameszoo is going to play some tunes. I heard through the grapevine that he’s releasing his debut album later this year, but more info on that soon. To end the evening Kidkanevil is going to do a Live set with an whole array of different styles of electronic music. Keywords are wonky, dubby and who knows what else he’s got in store. If you were impressed by his “Basho Basho” album, come support this upcoming producer.
Not only do you get two live shows…you can also visit Oi! afterwards for FREE. Breakage, Distance, N-Type, Gomes & Brutuzz will be playing some bangin’ Dubstep in the main room downstairs in case you want to go apeshit till the break of dawn.
