As Eglo records reaches it’s 10th release, West London’s Funkineven releases his third record already. On one side we have “Heartpound” which really is a tune for the dancefloor, while on the other side “Another Space” reminds me a bit of some early rave shit from back in the days. Steve has been busy remixing for Hyperdub artist Ikonika while at the same time practicing as part of Fatima‘s live band. Who made their debut appearance for Deviation at Fabric recently, supporting Bilal. Pictures of which can be found HERE.

You might gave heard about Africa HiTech on the low or heard some exclusives on Benji B‘s Deviation. I’ve always loved “Too Late” which was on the RBMA “Various Assets” CD and last year Warp released a compilation (2010 from Warp Records) with “Blen” on it. Both were probably the fruit of a remarkable cooperation between Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek at the Red Bull Music Academy 2007 in Toronto….thus forming Africa HiTech. This contemporary mix of Dubstep and Soultronica has people going nuts and of course we’ve been pumping this for a minute. I can easily say this is one of the most anticipated releases coming out this year.
Their first official 12″ is a fact and will be dropping next week on Warp. It contains a “Blen”, plus a remix and a brand new track called “The Sound of Tomorrow”. It’s already available on vinyl at Rush Hour for the early birds with a craving for vinyl instead of worms. Expect their EP to drop soon as well, but in the meantime lets focus on the 12″ and let it take you there.

FunkinEven 1956 is the latest artist to join the ranks of Eglo records (Floating Points / Alexander Nut). Featuring the incredible vocal talent of Swedish born/Hackney bred artist Fatima (who some of you will recognize through collaborations with SA-RA’s Shafiq Husayn and Stones Throws Dam-Funk) Kleer is the title track taken from the forthcoming 4 track EP, which showcases Funkineven’s individual futuristic soul bounce. Being his debut release we felt it only right to go all out and press the vinyl up on clear wax, so hold tight for the finished product. Having already been heavily supported in it’s demo form by 1Xtra’s Benji B, the track is now finished, mastered and ready to take on the globe!
West Londoner FunkinEven creates sounds that inhabit a similar atmosphere to The Neptunes, Model 500 and Bugz In The Attic just as much as they do Cameo, NPG and Zapp. Take a listen and invent your own labels… we just know that everytime it’s been performed live it has most definitely “blown up tha spot!”. The full EP will also feature two B side tacks ‘Mad Swing’ and ‘You’, which where previously available as rough versions on the net but have now been finished, polished and mastered for your bumping enjoyment. I was listening to Benji B’s Deviation show the other night and heard this lovely track soothing my ears. I must admit I’m a sucker for flutes so no suprise I fell in love with “Satin White” by Morgan Zarate. Check out Steve Parks’ “Movin In The Right Direction” for more ill flutes.
Now you might have heard his immensly dope song M.A.B - with (heavenly) Sarah Ann Webb on the vocals - that was on the Producer No. 1 album (Fat City Records). Another big tune you might have heard is “Sticks and Stones” featuring Eska and Ghostface Killah. I really hope we’ll hear a lot more of Morgan in the future, simply because this London producer is one of my favorites. In case you haven’t got M.A.B yet…buy it HERE! Oh and thanks to Fatsarazzi for the photo..

Known as Los Angeles’ “Ambassador of Boogie Funk“, dâm-funk represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere. Headquartered in the Culver City section of L.A., dâm (pronounced: ‘Dame’ as in Damon) spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-’80s styles known as Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk.
For dâm, “Funk is not a fad – it’s a way of life”. When you listen to beats like the one above, which is the first time many people heard dâm-funk on wax, its clear that he might well have been responsible for some of those OG g-funk lines on some of our favourite records too.
As a DJ/selector, dâm attracts the most discerning Boogie Funk afficionados to his Monday-night Funkmosphere parties. But it’s not just collectors at the bar toasting to the melodic sounds. Anyone who grooves to the likes of Slave, Aurra, early Prince, Prelude Records and the like, will get a dose of those groups’ unknown contemporaries – more obscure but equally Funk-worthy.
Earlier this year Dâm-Funk’s Debut 12″ dropped on Stones Throw Recordings with Stunning Artwork and 2 amazing tunes – “Sidewayz” and “Burgundy City“, the latter being one of the most heavily rinsed records on the Deviation Radio Show in 2008.
The new Boogie sound of LA has come to life thanks to Dam-Funk’s vintage synths and futuristic vision. He plays all the instruments and uses no sequencers no computers. The LP “Toeachisown” will be dropping 2009 on Stones Throw Records.
