What a refreshing sound have we stumbled upon. I really dig Lewis McCallum‘s tasty take on music. This New Zealand-based alto-sax player takes his Jazz background and love of Beats to concoct something of epic proportion…the single “First Date”. This track features vocals by Fran Kora and chordal assistance by (APRA Silver Scroll winner) Godfrey De Grut and is from his upcoming album “Syntheology”, coming out next month. With music like this coming out, it sometimes makes me wonder what else New Zealand is going to come with in the future? Big up to the Dorkmeister for dropping some knowledge on us.

Is it number five already? Damn how time seems to fly by. Gilles Peterson presents “Brownswood Bubblers Five” and again surprises us with a compilation full of nice music ranging from Soultronica to Hip Hop and from Jazz to Nu-Soul music. In case you’re not down with the whole Bubblers vibe – it goes a little something like this…

To end the year properly, we came up with the idea to sum up 2009 and let ya’ll know what we thought was epic and who ya’ll slept on. Electric Wire Hustle are a New Zeland based band and have just released their new, self-titled EP. The group consists of David ‘TaayNinh’ Wright (multi-instrumentalist and producer), Myele Manzanza (drums), Mara TK (vocals / guitarist / turntabilist / producer) and Benny Tones (sound engineer and producer). Developing their own sound and twist on modern hip-hop, psychedelic and soul, the music of EWH reaches forward while referencing key points of music’s past. Thick drums and percussion layered with synth lines, hints of the Fender Rhodes and nylon stringed guitars have your neck snapping while your ears crane to its soulful vocals … a future soul sound that fuses Marvin Gaye, Charles Mingus and Funkadelic with the likes of J Dilla, PPP and SA-RA Creative Partners.
