Last week me and the homie Mr. Speak were just hanging out and decided to put together this “The Future of Funk” mix. It’s a well known fact I like that Modern Funk so I thought it was only fitting to share my love with the rest of the world. Did my best to get some exclusives in there together with a healthy dose of that bomb funk. Many thanks to all the artists for helping me put this together and thanks to Deluge for the last minute cover art. Enjoy this 45 minute ride to the funky side. Destination…The Future of Funk!

The Shafiq En’ A-Free Ka EP is the first release from Shafiq Husayn’s full-length debut album onPlug Research, Shafiq En’ A-Free-Ka. The EP contains the hypnotizing first single “Cheeba,”where Shafiq creates a dark and heavy introspective mood that is matched perfectly by Bilal’s distinctive vocals. In addition, veteran beatsmith Nottz’s remix of the track re-works Shafiq’s music into a throwback to the classic Soulquarian sound and gives Bilal’s performance a new perspective. The B-side of the EP kicks off with the buzz track “Lil Girl” featuring UK newcomer Fatima. The beat is lo-fi, slightly off kilter and Fatima’s heavenly vocals are dead on. The stellar album cut is followed by another selection off the album, “Nirvana” as well as an accompanying remix from Mark de Clive-Lowe. Mark’s remix infuses some House music influences, turning the original head-nod of the beat into a pulsating spiritual dance anthem. Pre Order now on Rushhour. rushhour

One third of LA’s hottest musical force that is the Sa-Ra Creative Partners, Shafiq heads out alone on a stunning soul/jazz/afro/hip hop and funk infused LP, carefully created and crafted from intense studio sessions and on-going conversations, between like-minded friends and family.
SHAFIQ EN’ A-FREE-KA has been entirely composed with an armoury of outboard gear effects, synthesizers, electric guitars, strings, horns, a lot of modulation. “Hip-hop mastered the beat, but they didn’t do nothing with the changes,” says Shafiq. On the album Shafiq recruits Bilal, Sa-Ra member Om’mas Keith, emcee Count Bass D, London’s rising songstress Fatima, Sa-Ra vocalist Rozzi Daime, and a whole army of musicians and engineers. AYK
