‘The Mesektet’, in ancient egyptian mythology, is one of the two solar boats used by the sun god ‘Ra’ to travel through the cycle of night and day and carry the moon across the sky. It is told that he died every dusk, had to fight the dark forces of the underworld and bring light to the dead souls as he passed through – just to be reborn in the morning. Just like the sun god fLako uses ‘The Mesektet’ to end the cycle of darkness and prepare for his own rebirth, marking the end of an era in his style of production and move forward into new musical directions, which he already started to explore on his ‘Mini Toolbooth EP’. This release includes a collection of previously unreleased or only digitally available works from the time up until 2008. The artwork was created by surrealistic painter Dan May and this 2 x 12″ will be out May 6 on Project Mooncircle.

One of Holland’s biggest Hip Hop events is without a doubt Appelsap in the Oosterpark. This year they celebrate their 10 year anniversary and escpecially for creators of music, Appelsap has come up with the concept “Make a living, making music”. Next week three events will take place where young, talented producers (between the age of 16 and 26) are welcome to learn and create. Check out the details below..
Monday July 12th a meeting will take place at production company Sizzer. They will explain what kind of commercials they exactly do and how producing music for commercials exactly works. Here you’ll get a briefing about how to produce a track for the “Appelsap 10 Years Commercial” (shot by “Opslaan als”) and you will be guided by Sizzer as well. These guys have received several awards for their music productions including a Golden Lion in Cannes.
Location: Houtkopersdwarsstraat 3
Time: 16.00-18.00
Wednesday July 14th Ivo Bol will give a workshop about the use of the junXion software developed by Steim. JunXion is a Mac OSX data routing application that can process ‘sensors’ from any HID (joysticks, mice, touchscreens), MIDI, OSC, Audio, Arduino and Video device using conditional processing and remapping, with MIDI or OSC events as its output. The workshop will be focussed on the use of JunXion to use USB and Wii controllers as mid-controllers in combination with music or VJ hardware/software (like Ableton). In a hands-on session we’ll basically learn how to use game controllers as musical instruments. Bring your own Mac with prefered software and headphones with you. If you have any USB game controllers (joysticks) or Wii controllers bring them as well so you can put together a next level ‘live-performance’.
Location: Overtoom 301 (in the Cinema, 2nd floor)
Time: 12.00-15.00
Bring: Game controllers (USB), Mac platform with music software (if you do not have this, let us know well in advance), headphone.
Friday July 16th a Q&A will take place with Chilean producer fLako, how resides in Londen at the moment. This young producer recently took the step to make a living with making music. After the meet and greet we will listen to all your creations for the “Appelsap 10 years Commercial” and the winner will be announced. The winner will be rewarded the junXion Software and eternal fame of course.
Location: Club-up
Time: 21.30-23.00 (followed up by Poespas party with live-set by fLako)
Bring: Laptop
We would like to invite you to join us and sign up for these three workshops by sending an email (containing your name + contact info) to lynn@appelsap.net. Producers who want to participate in all three workshops have priority over the rest. Make sure you reply before friday, because there’s only a limited amount of participants. In the meanwhile enjoy this joint of the Beatnicks Vol. 3 release.

Error Code is the brand new single from Swiss beatmaker AEED , “Error Code” is the sequel to the stand-out debut “Synesthesia” released with Error Broadcast in 2009. AEED refines his trademark style of 8bit- influecend electric boogie and teamed up with three of Italys’ hottest beat fanatics. “Error Code” vinyl includes cooperation with Railster as well as a funk offence by AD Bourke and MPC wizardry by fLako on the remix flip.

This six-track EP contains music from Powell, O.Boogie, Desto, fLako & Berghem, Rez and ex RBMA participant Ki En Ra. The guys over at UpMyAlley hooked us up “Way Back” of Ki En Ra’s “City of Moment” EP available on OneSense Music. The Estonian teams up with SelfSays on this one (who can make something out of nothing). Enjoy and give Beatnicks Vol. 3 a try…it got some heat on it. Is it number five already? Damn how time seems to fly by. Gilles Peterson presents “Brownswood Bubblers Five” and again surprises us with a compilation full of nice music ranging from Soultronica to Hip Hop and from Jazz to Nu-Soul music. In case you’re not down with the whole Bubblers vibe – it goes a little something like this…
“Brownswood Bubblers provides a platform for unsung heroes and emerging talent from the Worldwide underground. The series distils the stream of exciting new artists that have become semi-permanent fixtures in Gilles’ playlists and DJ sets of late to create a suite of perfect bumps.”
Volume Five drops with March 8th and is full of great music, but what else did you expect? Some of this wonderful music has already been out for some time, while a few gems are highly exclusive and were unreleased up till now. Check out some profiles on their website. So far they’ve featured Ron Basejam, Electric Wire Hustle, Shuanise and Daru & Rena. Already this album is exclusively available through the Brownswood Recordings store, so act fast. You also get a FREE download when you purchase the CD HERE!
