It’s not often that I come across a new jazz artist that really captures me, but 28 year old London based Zara McFarlane definitely is one of them. Recently signed to Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings, Zara is releasing her full length LP “Until Tomorrow” on October 10th. Apart from tracks off the previously self released “Until Tomorrow EP” it includes new original material as well as 2 covers of tracks by the late Harry Whitaker. As said above the album is set to be released on October 10th, but you can pre order it here. For more on Zara McFarlane visit her Facebook page.

Armed with a MPC1000, MicroKorg and a KaossPad he creates futuristic soundwalls with crooked, broken vertebra drum patterns, while suddenly strange vocals shoot through your ears from left to right.
The A-side “A Bird’s Leg” was favourited by Gilles Peterson and played already many times on his Worldwide show as well as on Benji B‘s & DJ Lefto’s show. This is now available for pre-order on the Rush Hour website.

1-O.A.K. is the self proclaimed “freshman of the Honor Roll” and one of HR crew’s triple threat artist/writer/producers.  He is the young maestro behind the boards on Josie Stingray‘s “Doin’ My Thing” (featuring Jack Davey of J*DaVeY) [a production that made UK tastemaker Gilles Peterson’s (BBC Radio 1/Worldwide) Best of 2007 list].  He’s penned hooks and produced slap for fellow Oakland artists Beeda Weeda, J. Stalin, Young GullyPhilthy Rich and he’s also worked with UK producer Hint on his latest TruThoughts release, “Give It Up”. Aside from his vocal performances and productions, 1-O.A.K. has also garnered acclaim for his remix work, having done official remixes for Little Dragon and Penguin Prison.

He’s been putting in overtime with his work for others but we’re geeked to finally share his own debut single, “Me & You”.  Co-written alongside fellow Honor Roller Trackademicks and produced by 1-O.A.K. You can download this track for FREE here, thanks to Honorroll. Honorroll.

Robert_Glasper_1

I heard this track a while ago on Gilles Petersons Worldwide show with Robert Glasper and Bilal. Even searched for it a while, but never found it. Thanks to DJ Rahdu I finally got my hands on the song. Robert Glasper will release an outtake compilation soon. Can’t wait for that to drop since “Double Booked” is one of my favorite 2009 albums. As you might already know Glasper is a big dilla fan, and this new track is another Dilla tribute. The track features Zynzelay, and is a rework of Busta’s “Show me what you got” where dilla sampled Stereolab “Come and play in the milky night”. If you want more of this buy “Double Booked” on Robert Glasper Trio - Double Booked

Havana-Cultura-Remixed-Front-Cover

It was two years ago that Gilles Peterson visited Cuba for the first time on a reconnaissance mission to check out the new generation of Havana-based artists. Suitably impressed, he was back within the year for a 5-day session at the legendary Egrem Studios with Roberto Fonseca and his superb band. Revelling in his role as executive producer, it was a hot, sweaty, intense session but a fruitful one nonetheless.

Brownswood Recordings released those tracks on an album entitled “Gilles Peterson presents Havana Cultura: New Cuba Sound”, and with GP living as much in the electronic/dance scene as in the jazz world, the decision to commission remixes of these session tracks was an easy one. Consolidating the numerous parts was by no means as straightforward, nor indeed was settling on our preferred remixers to coax the spirit of the Egrem session into the club. In the end, they settled on a squad of big-hitting producers that they trusted to do justice to the original jams: the likes of Louie Vega, MJ Cole, 4hero, Carl Cox, Rainer Trüby, Gotan Project’s Philippe Cohen Solal, Seiji, Michel Cleis and Mocky. All veterans of the Worldwide underground and all equipped with the skills and experience to flip Havana Cultura onto a another level. And of course, in order to maximise the Cuban flavour, DJ Wichy and Doble Filo got cut loose on their favourites from the album, with awesome results.

CD02 in the Havana Cultura Remixed package boasts a bonus DJ mix courtesy of Gilles himself that neatly weaves together the disparate threads that make up a typical Peterson DJ set. Be on the look out for the Havana Cultura Remixed album which will be out June 7th.
