jrocc-jaylib

J Rocc (third member of Jaylib so to speak), put together this mixtape of Dilla, Madlib and Jaylib songs, as well as some of their sources, essentially telling the story of this group. Stones Throw had some promo copies of this CD floating around for a while that year, then took the Jaylib section and pressed it on a 45, which was released as the bonus 45 with “Champion Sound”. Both the CD and 45 are long out of stock. The photos were taken by B+ of Madlib in his studio in L.A. and Dilla in his in Detroit.

Q-Tip

On March 10th I was lucky enough to be able to sit down with Q-Tip (pictured above with Nicky of HEAVy after both their shows in Paradiso, Amsterdam) for about 30 minutes and ask him some of the many questions I’ve had for years as a real A Tribe Called Quest fanatic. My original reason for wanting to interview him was to hear his side of the story on the “Got Til It’s Gone” situation that Dilla shed light on in the 2003 Dustbusters audio interview. I intended to make it an audio interview too, but the audio didn’t turn out too good hence the transcript. Check it out after the jump.

It’s his first full length solo project in four years and is filled with superstar guests incl. production from J Dilla, Dangermouse and guest MC’s Ghostface and Raekwon. “Born Like This” was recorded this past year in various parts of the world and features some of DOOM’s brightest and brilliant rhyme skills ever.

This is DOOM‘s definitive album, encapsulating but surpassing all of his previous work and influences under various monikers. Inspired by the comic supervillain Dr. Doom, DOOM is undoubtedly one of the most versatile and distinctive MC’s in Hip Hop today. Pre-order now.

100k downloads. That’s the amount of times Pet Sounds in the Key of D was scooped. A Beach Boys project as Jay Dee would have seen in completed, crafted by the deft hands and mind of Bullion. That may have signaled what was to become his mete-ore-ric rise.
He added to his catalog in 2008 year with a highly anticipated and well received 12″ Get Familiar/Rude Effort, which is still available on iTunes. He’s now got the Young Heartache EP done. 92 BPM

Big up to Chikara at Tres Records for hooking us up with the new Big Tone LP release. You might have heard this Detroit veteran’s debut album The Drought, containing What’s Up (Intimacy) featuring Dwele, on ABB Records or his earlier work on J Dilla’s Welcome 2 Detroit.

Tone’s vision to provide insight to his lifestyle and perspective lead to the tattoo based theme of his upcoming album. He mirrors the tattoo artists’ ability to capture innermost desires, experiences and memories on the canvas of the soul. The Art Of Ink album will drop digitally March 17 and then via CD and vinyl on April 14.

Finally available again! One of Jay Dee’s first solo releases was actually more like a Frank-N-Dank record. The highlight is the dark bassline of “Love (Is a Thing of the Past),” but the Phat Kat-guested a-side can hang. Both 12″s  originally dropped in 2000 (even before “Welcome 2 Detroit“!) that features Jay Dee’s supreme soulful production with vocals from Frank-N-Dank. B-side wins again, with “Give it Up II” featuring a verse from the mysteriously credited BJ Dilla. Classic Detroit hip hop. Get it here.

We also recommend Houseshoes “The King James Version”. The King James Version is a smoke-filled trip through the used crates of the G.O.A.T Dilla. Cop it here.
