Norman Jay recently spoke on the fact that covers can indeed add something new to a (in this case Marvin Gaye) song. Times haven’t changed that much so the political message still stands. Enjoy this free download from Colonel Red “Holla” and look out for a remix from Om Unit as well. [via Ampsoul]

Tonight we bring that SOUL flava to the MiNiBAR and to help us with this, we invited local legend DJ Manga. This cat has been spinning for decades and is older than time itself (just kidding). Seriously though. Manga is well known here in Amsterdam for his ‘Legends’ party that he’s been doing together with Supreme Cuisine in the Paradiso for some time now. We’d like to invite everyone in the 020 area to drop by and have a drink with us. If you like that soulful music don’t be shy…we’ll see you tonight!
Oh before I forget. HERE‘s a free mix Manga did for QT-Online to get ya’ll in the mood…enjoy. Tracklist after the jump.

Electric Wire Hustle are a New Zeland based band and have just released their new, self-titled EP. The group consists of David ‘TaayNinh’ Wright (multi-instrumentalist and producer), Myele Manzanza (drums), Mara TK (vocals / guitarist / turntabilist / producer) and Benny Tones (sound engineer and producer). Developing their own sound and twist on modern hip-hop, psychedelic and soul, the music of EWH reaches forward while referencing key points of music’s past. Thick drums and percussion layered with synth lines, hints of the Fender Rhodes and nylon stringed guitars have your neck snapping while your ears crane to its soulful vocals … a future soul sound that fuses Marvin Gaye, Charles Mingus and Funkadelic with the likes of J Dilla, PPP and SA-RA Creative Partners.
On the album there are some guest appearances by artists like Georgia Anne Muldrow, Stacy Epps, Declaime (aka Dudley Perkins) and guitarist Billy TK. Check out the “Perception” video after the jump and BUY their album if you like what you hear. Big ups to Ray Knowledge for tipping us off…

For those who have never heard of André Orefjard before here’s the 411. André grew up in a diverse cultural suburban area in Stockholm, Sweden. He grew up to the sounds of Manu Dibango and Marvin Gaye, but soon started listening to hiphop like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest.
André then moved to New York and in the year 2000 André released his debut EP, “Back on Track”. This EP caught the attention of – London based label – Nuphonic, where he was signed. The same year “Things Do Not Appear” was included on the compilation “Nuphonic 4″. Shortly after that André was also featured on the compilation “Bass-Ment Classics” on the swedish label Raw Fusion with a sick remix of “I’ll Do That”.
Now a year later the magnificent “Refreshment of Thoughts” album dropped and “Realize” is the most tremendous joint on there so peep it! I was stunned to see that an artists of this capacity is nowhere to be found on the Internet so we hope we can get some eyes on this guy. Go to iTunes to get some of his music and please use Google to find you some more.

It’s still early here, but J. Kim just hit us with a huge ray of sunshine. The wonderful Karriem Riggins (as an incentive) made an exclusive track for leaking which gives the listener a hint on what to expect for the upcoming Virtuoso Experience shows, with this lovely soulful joint “Soul on Top”. For the Marvin Gaye fans, you’ll probably recognize some “I Want You” in there..

Leon Ware born 16th February 1940, Black Bottom, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.
During his youth he had an accident with a slingshot and caught himself in the eye leaving him totally blind for two years. Consequently, Leon was sent to the Fitzgerald School For The Blind, which, incidentally, is the same school that Stevie Wonder was sent to. Leon was one of several Motown Records producers who gained their first experience of the industry in the mid-50′s doo-wop group the Romeos, whose line-up included the legendary, Lamont Dozier.
He wrote the majority of Ike And Tina Turner’s ‘Nuff Said’ in 1970, before rejoining Motown and co-writing Michael Jackson’s 1972 hit ‘I Wanna Be Where You Are’ with T-Boy Ross, brother of Diana Ross.
Ware re-emerged as a vocalist in 1973, when he was featured on Quincy Jones’s ‘Body Heat’. With T-Boy Ross, he then began work on a romantic song-cycle, intending it to be his own solo debut.Instead, Motown boss Berry Gordy persuaded Ware to give the songs to Marvin Gaye, in return for being allowed to produce the superstar.
The result was the delicate and tender ‘I Want You’, one of Gaye’s finest artistic achievements.
This exposure enabled Ware to launch his own career with the acclaimed ‘Musical Massage’.
Leaving Motown in 1978, he enjoyed minor US hits in 1979 and 1981 with ‘What’s Your Name?’ and ‘Baby Don’t Stop Me’, in the same heavily produced, lush style that he had fashioned for Gaye.
He has worked, written or produced material for artists as diverse as: Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Norman Connors, The Main Ingredient, Average White Band, Donny Hathaway, Bobby Womack, Rufus, Minnie Riperton…in short, you name a soul band and Leon Ware has had some involvement at one stage!
