You might have noticed that BBE has been releasing some real quality compilations lately. One I’ve been looking forward to is this new “DJ Spinna presents: The Boogie Back” album that will be out November 24th. A cornerstone of Hip-Hop’s late 90′s indie-uprise, DJ Spinna made much of his first impression on listeners as the musical background of his group The Jigmastas (having released an impressive slew of 12″ singles on his then self-run label Beyond Real during this time) as well as providing the canvas for an array of that era’s lyrical giants. As an emcee in New York City, if you didn’t have a Spinna production under your belt, well, you just hadn’t accomplished all there was to accomplish. Everyone from Mos Def, Talib Kweli to Pharaohe Monch boasted Spinna beats to prove their worth to the scene. At the height of indie-kingpin Rawkus Records heyday, Spinna was in demand, also churning out timeless classics of the era from the likes of J-Live, Mr. Complex and The Polyrhythm Addicts (his all-too-brief collabo-group with Apani B., Shaabam Sadeeq and Complex). Spinna is back with his latest foray into the world of boogie.
After many succesful ‘Strange’ series (remember those classic “Strange Games and Things” compilations?) it’s about time BBE released a sequal to “Strange Breaks”. It’s successor is called “Strange Breaks & Mr. Thing Vol. 2″ and is set to release tomorrow as a digital release. For those who don’t know…Mr. Thing scratches shit up like an angry hooker in a catfight. Eighteen of the best kept breaks are mixed together for your listening pleasure just to give you a taste. Last weekend Dam-Funk touched down in Rotterdam and tore the roof off! After this Strange Fruit saga, there will be a sequal or as you will a second chance for those that missed out. This time we contacted the fellas from Plat du Jour and told them we were doing a sequal to the DAMN…FUNK!?! promotional mix. MRP and me wanted to dig a lot deeper this time and behold the outcome – DAMN…MORE FUNK!?! – Thirtyfive minutes of nasty, sweaty funk covered with some nu-boogie flavour sprinkled on top. We’re proud to bring you our second Boogie/Funk mix and we hope you enjoy it as much or even more as you did the first one. Don’t forget to check out Dam-Funk Oct. 22nd at the Plat du Jour ADE special in the Bitterzoet (Amsterdam). When we heard that Dam-Funk was coming over, MRP and me decided to get our funky strutt on and mix up a little Boogie/Funk mix. Enjoy these twentyfive minutes of pure, unadulterated Funk and get in the mood for Dam-Funk’s European tour. Our friends at Strange Fruit loved the idea and so we suggested this mix was to be used as a promotional mix for the Strange Fruit presents: Dam-Funk event, held on October 10th in Rotterdam. Thelonius & Lucky Dubz will be sound providers for the rest of the evenening so come one, come all and get ya boogie on! And here we go again with another mix we did a while back. Really coming out of the woodworks with these mixes now that we got a Mixcloud account. This “Moovmnt Beat Special” mix, was played on Red Bull Music Academy Radio via djbroadcast at the Rooms of Red Bull. We never shared this one, but it has a couple of nice exclusive joints on there we know you’ll enjoy! Oh it was mixed by me, myself and MRP and photo credits go to MRP as well.
