This morning the name Chris Turner popped up in our timeline and I’m glad it did. This Oakland born New Yorker is a philosopher of melodies and a true LOVEchild. The amazing 1st leak of his upcoming “LOVEchild” album is “Liquid Love”, which was produced by The Stuyvesants and written & arranged by himself & MeLo-X. Available as free download on Mr. Turner’s Bandcamp page…enjoy!

Brooklyn-based Machinedrum is hard to describe and ranges from four to the floor electronic music with heavy synths to funky soulfull beats that Jesse Boykins can sing to. On his new “Many Faces” EP, which is being released through LuckyMe, he shows a side that I personally haven’t seen/heard before. I only heard a few songs from Jesse’s upcoming album, but never knew this producer was so versatile. Perhaps it’s best described as innovative club music, but you have to be open to new sounds and harmonies.
There’s a limited vinyl edition (100 copies) including a Tee + cassette tape + 12-inch EP (more info soon). All you digital heads, please visit to get your freak on.

During his stay in London Jesse Boykins III shot his new “Amorous“ video. He captured different shots of love in this beautiful city. The video is directed by Dr Woo.
Jesse’s latest album “The Beauty Created” is still available on
Jonathan Kim shot this video while he was at sound check for his gig at the Elbo Room in San Francisco with funky worm Exile this past week. As they came into the venue, he saw Exile and Teeko jamming out on their respective equipment, and he was impressed to say the least. Teeko has been making some noise with his group F.A.M.E. as well as recently working with Mark Ronson in NY for his upcoming album. Exile is coming with his “Radio Remix” album so keep an eye out for that. Great to see two artists come together, and create some amazing music together.
First of all I’d like to give due props to Osman for gettin’ is hip to Stalley. He sent us a video a few months back and we liked it a lot, but I personally never digged deeper than that. Now my man Deluge recently did and in light of his On-Point interview, I thought it would be only right to get ya’ll hip to Madstalley as well.
This Ohio native hailing from New York dropped his mixtape “MadStalley: The Autobiography” last year, done over re-workings of Madlib beats showcasing his potential. Now 2010 is definitely Stalley’s year to blow. Stalley’s heavily featured on Ski Beatz upcoming “24 Hour Karate School” mixtape (on Dame Dash’ Creative Control label) and is also set to release a project in collaboration with Sa-Ra Creative Partners.

The Amsterdam-based wonder kid – Full Crate – just hit us up with a brand new joint called “Make Me Laugh”. Besides being a close personal friend and one of my favorite Dutch DJ’s. I have always had the feeling that Crate would go on to make real, pure quality music. I can tell you that there are a lot more audible goodies coming your way this summer so stay hungry. In case you don’t remember or have never heard of “She Was Fly” or “Aftersexin’” please educate yourself and download these two gems for free. For the die hard Mar fans…good news. There will be a new collaboration coming real soon. Promise!
Cali rapper Versis laced “Make Me Laugh” with some nice vocals and you might have heard him on some fLako tracks before. Our very own Deluge did the artwork during his NY trip so I guess you could call this an international thang project. Nice laid back hiphop joint free of charge…can’t beat that with a baseball bat.

One thing is clear when listening to Lee Fields’ 2009 release ‘My World’: this record could easily be mistaken for an unearthed diamond that is finally brought to surface after at least 35 years. Vintage soul and funk sounds from the late 60’s and early 70’s are perfectly captured here in ballads, uptempo grooves and interludes by the Expressions, Lee’s backing band and the team behind Brooklyn’s Truth & Soul Records.
Fields has been making records ever since his departure from his religious upbringing in North Carliona and move to New York in 1969. This old soul is still alive and kicking today, singing with a voice both tender and sand-paper rough on records in the vein of Otis Redding and Bobby Womack. On this solid album filled with thick drumgrooves, horns and string sections, Fields deals with the themes; such as heartaches, adoration of loved ones and social problems; that have been so common in soul and funk music. Rather than sounding dated and overly-familiar, Lee and his band succeed in writing songs that will last throughout time to remain relevant today.
It’s hard to pick highlights in such a well put-together album. Standout tracks are delivered when Lee yearns for affection on ‘Love Comes And Goes’ and ‘The Only One Loving You’; is driven almost to tears after being left behind in ‘Honey Dove’; and gives social commentary on ‘My World,’ driven by a lush drum groove and strings that will send chills up your spine.
No fillers here, except for the three instrumental tracks, ‘Expressions’ Theme,’ ‘These Moments’ and ‘Last Ride,’ that round out a very nice record, surpassing a number of artists who attempt to capture that old sound but simply fail to write good songs. Visit Rushhour to pre-order the album on VINYL or CD!
