brownswood-bubblers-5

Is it number five already? Damn how time seems to fly by. Gilles Peterson presents “Brownswood Bubblers Five” and again surprises us with a compilation full of nice music ranging from Soultronica to Hip Hop and from Jazz to Nu-Soul music. In case you’re not down with the whole Bubblers vibe – it goes a little something like this…

“Brownswood Bubblers provides a platform for unsung heroes and emerging talent from the Worldwide underground. The series distils the stream of exciting new artists that have become semi-permanent fixtures in Gilles’ playlists and DJ sets of late to create a suite of perfect bumps.”

Volume Five drops with March 8th and is full of great music, but what else did you expect? Some of this wonderful music has already been out for some time, while a few gems are highly exclusive and were unreleased up till now. Check out some profiles on their website. So far they’ve featured Ron Basejam, Electric Wire Hustle, Shuanise and Daru & Rena. Already this album is exclusively available through the Brownswood Recordings store, so act fast. You also get a FREE download when you purchase the CD HERE!

Aha…finally some Fashawn on MOOVMNT. I heard about this cat a while back and he reminds me a lot of that cat from the Pharcyde on the joint we have for you. When someone told me Exile was producing his upcoming album - “Boy Meets World” – (which drops September 1st) I was sold. This cat has a great delivery, fresh wordplay and charisma. His brand new single – “Freedom” –  is now available on iTunes! On the b-side you can find “Our Way” featuring partner in rhyme Evidence. Last, but not least a bonus track…“The Outer City”.

stuart-zender-azur

Here we are again on this crazy, lazy sunday afternoon with a giganticly slept on joint for you to spark. This week it was our buddies from BamaLoveSoul that made us realize we’ve been sleeping on – ex-Jamiroquai bassist Stuart Zender’s side project - AZUR (pronounced Az U R) like sleeping beauty. The project was to show off the men’s writing skills and Stu’s own producing talents on the Virgin Records label. The group was to feature a horn section from Cuba, Pino Palladino, and D’Angelo. A single was planned (major worldwide release) for Spring 2000. So what went wrong? It seems Tyrese did. Virgin’s decision to release and promote the Tyrese album seemed to upset Stu. I don’t know why or how fully this is true but we know the result. Virgin Records kept sending money to Stuart & Donny for the AZUR project, but AZUR kept sending back no word. Virgin decided to call it quits and so the album disappeared.

“Love is So Cold” (featuring D’Angelo) was originally slated as “My Baby’s Eyes” for D’Angelo’s Voodoo album, but I guess he cut it. Smooth delivery, subtle bassline and light percussion. I didn’t realize before, but this is on Yoda II release too. So I guess I overslept on this one right here…

The track was also brilliantly sampled by Exile on his latest “Radio” album…Stay Tunes (Stay Here).

These days, one would be hard-pressed to find a Hip-Hop fan that is satisfied with the culture’s representation on mainstream radio. Take Los Angeles’ Exile, the man responsible for the exceptional production work on 2007’s critically acclaimed collaboration with rapper Blu, Below the Heavens. Long exasperated by the lack of originality on the radio, the sought-after producer brainstormed a concept to reinvent radio through the use of Hip-Hop’s first technique, sampling. -Allhiphop.com.

After releasing both his guest-filled production album, Dirty Science, and his critically acclaimed full-length collaboration with Blu, Below The Heavens, within a year of each other – as well as landing major label placements with Mobb Deep & 50 Cent (”Pearly Gates”), Jurassic 5 (”Baby Please”), and Kardinal Offishall & Akon (”Graveyard Shift”) – it seems as though Exile has been taking some time off since 2007. But looks can be deceiving, as Ex has merely been locked up in the lab, experimenting and plotting another onslaught of releases for 2009. Projects already on the agenda include a full-length albums with rising talent, Fashawn, a handful of tracks on the latest from longtime collaborator, Blame One, a solo MC effort from Ex, and there have even been talks of an album with underground favorite, Shawn Jackson. But before any of those – there is this: Radio.

A sampling experiment gone right, Radio quickly turned into a passion project for Exile – one that has already taken years in the making. Rarely one to take the expected path, Ex decided to flip the script a bit and instead of doing the typical instrumental album, challenged himself to only sampling sounds taken from his local L.A. radio waves to make his beats & statements with. The result is a sonic collage of crisp drums, static feedback, talking samples, and sounds from a wide array of genres – all filtered through Exile’s signature seamlessly chopped-up, tempo-switching style, and composed to convey succint life messages to the audience.

For the unveiling of this new project, Exile was kind enough to bless me with a few tracks from the forthcoming album, which I’ll be spreading out between now and the album’s release on January 20th. So to start it off, here’s a free download of “In Love,” a track which most people have been trying to hunt down ever since Ex first debuted at the Red Bull Music Academy in Barcelona a few weeks ago. A few quality low-quality rips from the video have surfaced, but this is the official, full-length, mastered version – available here for the first time anywhere. One of the easier-to-place selections from Exile’s radio waves palette, the main samples of “In Love” consist of re-arranged quotes from a fundraiser on Carlos Nino’s Spaceways radio show on KPFK, matched with chops of a Dwight Trible song from the same broadcast.

And per usual, stick around after the jump, where I’ve provided three personal highlights from some of Exile’s lesser known instrumental works, taken from various compilations. More Radio leaks, single announcement and cover art (peace to
Wuzz> and Lyle Owerko for the above art) are all coming here soon, so stay tuned. Re-posted from Kenny Fresh…Freshclusive on FreshSelects.net.
