OJ + Gold = Time Leak:
Now most of you where already aware of the French duo called Union. Eealier this year they came correct with “Wings” featuring Elzhi and they now return with a brand new single and video entitled “Time Leak”. For this one OJ and Gold teams up with Talib Kweli and Sly Johnson to create some nice jazz-minded, electronic hip hop music. Their upcoming album, “Analogtronics” will feature the likes of MF Doom, Guilty Simpson and Elzhi. Out on Fat Beats early next year, but in the meanwhile grab the single over at or look for the triangle shaped 7″ over at Fatbeats. Oh and can’t forget to shout out my man fLako for delivering another crackin’ remix!

Yes..I know Dilla month is over..and we heard way too many weak Dilla remixes/ tributes. But must say Melbourne’s M-Phazes turned “Slum Village – Raise It Up” into something new just using the drum pattern and his own westcoast feel. RAISE IT UP for the J Dilla Foundation!!

Another variation from Mar has landed in our inbox. This time paying homage to Dilla Dawg (R.I.P.). This “Fantastic Vol. 2″ re-imagination is available as a free download on Mar’s Bandcamp page. Also heard him saying he was working on an Oddisee variation so keep an ear out for that.

Phonte from Little Brother/Foreign Exchange took some time to upload some unreleased gems on his Twitter/SwiftFM. From early Little Brother tracks to the Slum Village “Further” demo. Some of it is just unfinished stuff and not that great, but a nice way to see Phonte’s progression in the last 5 years. The track that stands out most is Kaidi Tatham‘s remix of Total Science’s “Wasting Time” featuring Darien Brockington. Enjoy…Photo: Tobias/Kompleks

Slum Village shocked the hip-hop community when Elzhi and T3 took to their Twitter profiles to announce that the group’s next album, Villa Manifesto, would be their last. But they’re going out on a high note. The group’s sixth studio LP, set to be released via E1 Records on July 27, knocks with the cushy precision of its predecessors while featuring new verses from all five members: T3, Elzhi, Baatin, J Dilla and Illa J. With production from Khrysis, Young RJ, Dilla, Hi-Tek, Mr. Porter and Dave West, the album marks the end of an era for not only Detroit rap, but for hip-hop culture. Fortunately for us, they close the SV chapter with a bang. The album is now streaming fully on the Slum Village Myspace. DONT BOOTLEG SV. YRB

I’m sure we all haven’t forgotten about what happened in Haiti in January. With the “Notes For Haiti” compilation album, Detroit and L.A. join unite and come together on one album to show love and support. Most songs you might already know, but still well worth the support! Check the official press release…
Moved by the catastrophic earthquake and aftershocks that ravaged the island nation of Haiti, a group of artists is asking the public to remember the difference each of us can make. The project, “Notes for Haiti”, is a way for the collective to thank the public for their support of the island nation to date – and hopefully inspire folks to give more of the help that’s that still needed.
Estimates are that beyond the more than 230,000 Haitians who lost their lives as a result of the earthquakes, another 300,000 were injured and over one million were left homeless.
The album is available digitally in a “pay-what-you-want” format as of Tuesday, June 1, 2010 through the website notesforhaiti.bandcamp.com. All proceeds from album sales and donations are funneled directly to Oxfam America’s ongoing Haiti relief efforts.
The compilation features exclusive content and album material from Karriem Riggins, eLZhi (Slum Village), Blu, Fashawn, Exile, Aloe Blacc, Crown Royale (Buff 1 and DJ Rhettmatic), Invincible, Now On (Mayer Hawthorne, IX Lives, Jackson Perry), 14KT, Houseshoes, Co$$, Sene, AB, Marv Won, Jordan Rockswell, and SlopFunkDust.
The concept behind the “pay-what-you-want” format (used previously by bands such as Radiohead) is that the user can dictate the price paid for the album as a whole, or for each song purchased individually (for as little as $1). The donations are processed directly to Oxfam America through the secure BandCamp-PayPal portal, removing unnecessary overhead or infrastructure costs at the point of sale.
Oxfam is working in multiple locations to provide clean water, sanitation, shelter, seeds and running cash for work programs. Though their public appeal to Haiti has closed (for the time), this project will continue to affect their ongoing efforts on the island.
Detroit natives Niles Heron (Los Angeles) and Sarah Lockridge-Steckel (Boston) executive produced the album with gracious contributions from artists, promoters, managers, and good people nationwide.
Please visit the Notes For Haiti Bandcamp page and give generously! I just donated $5 and I truly hope that you, you and yes you have a heart as well and dig deep into your pockets. We’re only streaming these two bangers at a low bitrate, cuz for only $1 you can BUY the entire album.
