Another leak from KCRW‘s Mathieu Schreyer. This time it’s a track from a Raphael Saadiq‘s unreleased album “Pookie Blue Room”. You can read Mathieu’s inside story below.
“Back in 2004 Raphael Saadiq opened his studio doors to Spacek to produce an album for one of his sub labels. The album was supposed to be called “Pookie Blue Room” and features 10 songs produced by both Steve Spacek and Morgan Zarate with Raphael singing on all of them and featuring guest appearances by Common, Q-tip, Ledisi, Steve Spacek and Sir Bentley….anyhow the album was never completed and therefore never released…”[Shouts to DJ Rahdu and Mathieu Schreyer].

After releasing “Blen”Steve Spacek and Mark Pritchard are about to drop another one on us. Africa HiTech‘s first EP is called “Hitecherous” and I can assure you this new 6-track banger is going to wake people up. With their futuristic dub inspired sound combined with the bass bubbling and synth soothing skills, I think this could appeal to a huge audience. Watch out for this to drop late June on Warp Records!

You might gave heard about Africa HiTech on the low or heard some exclusives on Benji B‘s Deviation. I’ve always loved “Too Late” which was on the RBMA “Various Assets” CD and last year Warp released a compilation (2010 from Warp Records) with “Blen” on it. Both were probably the fruit of a remarkable cooperation between Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek at the Red Bull Music Academy 2007 in Toronto….thus forming Africa HiTech. This contemporary mix of Dubstep and Soultronica has people going nuts and of course we’ve been pumping this for a minute. I can easily say this is one of the most anticipated releases coming out this year.
Their first official 12″ is a fact and will be dropping next week on Warp. It contains a “Blen”, plus a remix and a brand new track called “The Sound of Tomorrow”. It’s already available on vinyl at Rush Hour for the early birds with a craving for vinyl instead of worms. Expect their EP to drop soon as well, but in the meantime lets focus on the 12″ and let it take you there.

For over a decade the Red Bull Music Academy has given young, upcoming artists a place to develop themselves. Not only do they learn, but a very important part of the RBMA is creating and exposing! What better way to do this than to record a compilation album together with fellow participants as well as more established musicians and sometimes even legends.
Under the name ‘Various Assets’ this has been done several times. These CD’s were never released to the general public and contain unreleased material as well as music that has been released like Flying Lotus his “Tea Leaf Dancers” featuring Andreya Triana. These compilation CD’s were recorded all over the world from Melbourne to Seattle and from Toronto to Barcelona.
We from Moovmnt had never actually heard all of this material and thought it would be a good idea to select our favourites and release it as a mix. Some music you might have heard on our website already, but I can assure you that some of this material has been waiting, hidden in the dust, to come out of your speakers and give you a taste of the wonderful things that are going on at the Red Bull Music Academy.
We tried to keep the mix close to our personal taste and yet it contains a divers array of different kinds of music. Enjoy some tasteful hip hop, nu-soul, future funk, soulful house, electronic music with a dash of dubstep to go out with a bang. Now we’re off to London to soak up some of that RBMA energy, so enjoy this one. We’ll be keeping you updated about what goes on behind the scenes at the Academy, so tune in for some exclusive footage, music, etc.
Gent’s very own DJ Azer was so nice to bless us with a dope mix he recorded recently. Naturally we loved the Moovmnt mix and so we decided to host it for ya’ll. The mix will also be played on the Laid Back show on FM Brussel so peep that. Big shout out to all our Belgian buddies who are holdin’ it down..oh and click continue reading for the tracklist!
