lee-fields-my-world

One thing is clear when listening to Lee Fields’ 2009 release ‘My World’: this record could easily be mistaken for an unearthed diamond that is finally brought to surface after at least 35 years. Vintage soul and funk sounds from the late 60’s and early 70’s are perfectly captured here in ballads, uptempo grooves and interludes by the Expressions, Lee’s backing band and the team behind Brooklyn’s Truth & Soul Records.

Fields has been making records ever since his departure from his religious upbringing in North Carliona and move to New York in 1969. This old soul is still alive and kicking today, singing with a voice both tender and sand-paper rough on records in the vein of Otis Redding and Bobby Womack. On this solid album filled with thick drumgrooves, horns and string sections, Fields deals with the themes; such as heartaches, adoration of loved ones and social problems; that have been so common in soul and funk music. Rather than sounding dated and overly-familiar, Lee and his band succeed in writing songs that will last throughout time to remain relevant today.

It’s hard to pick highlights in such a well put-together album. Standout tracks are delivered when Lee yearns for affection on ‘Love Comes And Goes’ and ‘The Only One Loving You’; is driven almost to tears after being left behind in ‘Honey Dove’; and gives social commentary on ‘My World,’ driven by a lush drum groove and strings that will send chills up your spine.

No fillers here, except for the three instrumental tracks, ‘Expressions’ Theme,’ ‘These Moments’ and ‘Last Ride,’ that round out a very nice record, surpassing a number of artists who attempt to capture that old sound but simply fail to write good songs. Visit Rushhour to pre-order the album on VINYL or CD!

pseudo_slang-cover_art

Pseudo Slang, a Buffalo, New York based hip-hop duo comprised of rapper Emcee Sick, of the crewXtracts Of Slang, and producer Tone Atlas, of the crew Pseudo Intellectuals, are proud to announce the release of their new studio LPBroke & Copasetic” – the album’s lead single – features R&B/new soul songstress Vinia Mojica whom we all have been waiting for to drop something new ever since her “Black & Blue” bootleg (with productions by Hi-Tek, DJ Spinna & Ge-0logy). Their first single sounds like hiphop used to sound when I was still into vinyl. I guess that’s a big compliment coming from me nowadays so ya’ll keep an eye out for Pseudo Slang’s new album “We’ll Keep Looking” when it drops June 2nd via Fat Beats Records.

jazz-liberatorz-_-fruit-of-the-past-2009

The French beatmaking trio of Madhi, Dusty & DJ Damage better known as the Jazz Liberatorz, are back with another timeless jazz influented hip-hop album. Although this is not my favorite release from the Jazz Liberatorz, I can still understand that people can relate to this, and this reminds people of the time when hip-hop really sounded this way.

The new album entitled “Fruit of the Past” features Aloe Blacc, Fat Lip, Wildchild, Mos Def and others! Thanks to our Japanese friends for sending this.. moovmnt’s favorite tracks below…

dimlite_kodak2juli07

For all the beatheads out there, #8 of 7 is the last in the All City beat series. This 45 comes from Swiss beatmaker Dimlite. 4 Minutes of abstract futuristic madness crossing between sick 80’s style new wave dirt into dreamy soul tinged indie-smurf folk..I couldn’t explain it better. Maybe you’re just not ready for this..but you should give it a try.

Upcoming releases on All City: Mike Slott, Martyn, Nosaj Thing, Take, Ruckazoid

My man J Kim hooked us up with this joint early in the morning. Now I was kinda busy, but I had to squeeze this dope Co$$ joint in. Fonetik on the production and this is L.A. at it’s finest! Got nothing but love for this kinda music. This one didn’t make the upcoming album that’ll be out on Tres Records late summer.

vstylez1

After being shot in the head and losing a fiance to suicide Vstylez has stayed persistant in the pursuit of his dreams. He began recording his solo project “Masterpiece Theater” with additional scores by DJ DEZ (Slum Village) and MoSS. “Clash of the Titans” has a sick line-up and MoSS did a hell of a job on the production. It’s Hiphop like we used to listen to back in the days…quality. Together with Buff1 and Stretch Money V gives us “Can’t Stop a Man” which is just as impressive and was produced by DJ DEZ. Listen for yourself and pass judgement. Thnx to DetroitRap

crossrhodes-free

K-Murdock just released the “Limited Budget Unlimited Quality” album…for FREE!! Crossrhodes is a collective consisting of K-Murdock, Raheem Devaughn and Wes Felton – who did several collaborations – prior to Raheem’s major label deal. This album was recorded in a 3 month span (from November 2001 – Feb 2002) I read that Raheem announced this free album on Twitter recently, but thanks to Neosonix Blogspot here it is.

Now let me be honest and tell ya’ll that this is one hell of an album considering the price you have to pay for it. The productions are tight and certainly not half ass or rushed. No surprise the vocals are tight as can be and the skits are funny. We’ve been waiting for some  quality soul music for a while and here it is in the form of a free release…now ain’t that something?! Tracklisting after the jump…
