All we can say about this release is…WOW. Eventhough this is not the best DJ Mitsu the Beats album ever…it’s still one hell of an album with some killer highlights.

The title track “A Word To The Wise” is not what I hoped it would be, but the second joint “Ridin'” with Kev Brown and Cy Young made up for this for sure. Together with Jose James Mitsu brings us “Promise In Love” and this nothing less than a beautiful, jazzy song – come on who doesn’t love horns? Now “Night In Vienna” might or might not be your cup of tea, but for me personally this is the nicest (full of flutiness) non-hiphop song on the entire album. It takes me back to the mid seventies with its uptempo soulfulness.

Now after a couple of mediocre tracks we get to the nitty gritty. The best hiphop tracks on “A Word To The Wise” are “The Game Changer” featuring Georgia Anne Muldrow & Wild Child (certified funky banger!) and the previously leaked “Untitled” joint with Elzhi. Even if you heard it before…this Detroit banger is still sick. To finish it off…”Dim Skyline” with Mark de Clive Low. What can we say? An attempt to genius, but it just didn’t have enough variation in it to be called that. Nevertheless very pleased to hear Mark de Clive Low again! Okay we’re done…oh wait. Ivana Santilli ends this review with “Playing Again”. Soulful, lovely…done. 8 out of 10..that’s what’s up.

Some of you might have slept on the “Soul Mixtape” by DJ Jazzy Jeff from 4 years ago. For those that did we have a crazy song we had to share with soul singer V who recently released his second album. His first album – The Revelation Is Now Televised – is a true masterpiece and was produced by Jazzy Jeff and Pete Kuzma (Jill Scott’s band leader). To be perfectly honest V’s latest album is a bit of a disappointment and it doesn’t come close to the first BBE release.

Today a legend told his story to a select group of people and we were lucky enough to be there. Tony Allen is undeniably the best Afrobeat drummer ever and he came all the way to Amsterdam for a Red Bull Music Academy masterclass .

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is eight brothers from the south side of Chicago, all sons of the Sun Ra trumpeter Philip Cohran — a street-marching brass band in the New Orleans tradition; jazz to dance, with a funk sensibility honed by hip hop. Here are two scorchers from the imminent album. Written by Philip Cohran in memory of Alyo Tolbert, star dancer for the Montu Dance Company in Chicago, Alyo is its hardest, funkiest track (with Malcolm Catto from The Heliocentrics on drums); and in memory of the band’s friend and rabblerouser. One pressing only, in metallic ink sleeve.

And no this is not a free download, although it is the best €8,50 I’ve spent in a long time. Maybe even better than the €8 I spent at Little Italy this afternoon. And believe me that pizza was damn good. Pepperoni,  mushrooms, paprika, cheese, tomato sauce..Now go and get your copy of “Alyo/Flipside” at Rushhour.

Ever since “The Oscillations: Sine” it’s been a bit quiet around DC’s hottest female vocalist. Muhsinah explained us that this is an oldie and nothing ever actually happened with “Plan B”. We thought this Kev Brown Mix was way too nice to just remain on the shelves for an eternity. Bilal Salaam supposedly did a remix too, but we haven’t heard that one yet.
