Legendary hip-hop group House of Pain made a special side trip from their current tour to visit Boston, MA yesterday in celebration of their Adidas x House of Pain collaboration sneaker for St. Patrick’s Day. The group worked with Concepts on a green Adidas Campus sneaker to celebrate the holiday. As well as the Campus sneaker, a special t-shirt by Slick from Dizzisit, who was also in attendance, was developed.

After the Concepts event, House of Pain performed a private St. Patrick’s Day show at the Roxy in downtown Boston – one hell of a special treat on the holiday of the Irish. (Source: Highsnobiety)

A new rapgroup has been born and goes by the name of Diamond District. Here’s an introduction and some audible goodies from their upcoming album In The Ruff that drops 4/14/09.

“The District of Columbia is home to our nations politics and some of the wealthiest African Americans in the country. It is also home to one of the nations largest income gaps with some of the highest crime, murder and STD rates. It is the culmination of these statics that defines DC Hip Hop. Oddisee (producer/MC from Prince George’s county, Maryland) formed this group with solo artist, XO and YU. The idea was to create a mid-90’s boom-bap themed record for the DC, Maryland & Virginia metropolitan area. XO, (born & raised in North West DC) defines what it is to be a black male raised in the district, with lyrics that have a way of philosophizing that street life. Oddisee defines the experience of growing up in black middle class Maryland. Bordering the poverty his and many other families fled to escape, they found the troubles of the inner city came along with them. YU, having been raised in the district, Maryland & Virginia, shows that DC culture exceeds it’s 10 mile radius. “In The Ruff” is the DMV’s soundtrack. It’s street savvy, politically conscious lyrics and grimy beats depict life in and around our nations capitol.”

I was listening to Benji B’s Deviation show the other night and heard this lovely track soothing my ears. I must admit I’m a sucker for flutes so no suprise I fell in love with “Satin White” by Morgan Zarate. Check out Steve Parks’ “Movin In The Right Direction” for more ill flutes.

Now you might have heard his immensly dope song M.A.B – with (heavenly) Sarah Ann Webb on the vocals – that was on the Producer No. 1 album (Fat City Records). Another big tune you might have heard is “Sticks and Stones” featuring Eska and Ghostface Killah. I really hope we’ll hear a lot more of Morgan in the future, simply because this London producer is one of my favorites. In case you haven’t got M.A.B yet…buy it HERE! Oh and thanks to Fatsarazzi for the photo..

A few days ago I was watching Donwill’s “Laura’s Song” video and I was simply amazed at how Donwill and Marques Green managed to make a ’09 version of High Fidelity. Donwill’s upcoming album ‘Don Cusack in High Fidelity‘ is a remake of the movie ‘High Fidelity‘ (starring John Cusack). Donwill will release this project later this year, because he needs to focus on Tanya Morgan’s highly anticipated Brooklynati album. I added a download of their first single “So Damn Down”.

By now most everyone is familiar with the story of musical legend J Dilla. The quiet, prolific producer collaborated with everyone from Erykah Badu to Common to Janet Jackson to Prince. Dilla was just beginning to capitalize on his cult status when he sadly passed at age 32 due to Lupus-related complications. Jay Stay Paid is a 25 track collection of unreleased Dilla beats mixed and arranged by Pete Rock. While mostly instrumental, “J$P” also offers a few guests vocals from artists that Dilla worked with or admired including Black Thought of The Roots, MF DOOM, and M.O.P.

Curtailing any notion of jumping on some sort of Dilla bangwagon, Jay Stay Paid was executive produced by Dilla’s mother Maureen Yancey (aka Ma Dukes) along with the musical supervision of Dilla’s only real musical idol, Pete Rock. “It wasn’t rushed and it wasn’t haphazard,” explains Ms Yancey. “This album combines what he did in the beginning of his career, what he did in some of our early hospital stays, which was very deep, and some stuff pulled from old floppy disks & DATs. Its mind blowing…this is like the missing links to Dilla’s legacy.”

The format of the album plays like a radio show with Pete Rock as the program director. With regards to Pete’s involvement, Ms. Yancey gets very excited, “Dilla wanted to pattern himself behind Pete. His dream was to become as close as possible to what Pete stood for. Pete meant everything to him. Dilla would have just been flabbergasted! ” Pete’s sentiments were the same toward Dilla, “Dude was amazing. He just kinda came outta nowhere and the more you heard his beats the better they got. He may not be here with us, but it’s all good we’re going to keep his music alive and well.”

Jay Stay Paid will be released on June 2nd on Nature Sounds.
