OH SHIT…Peter Opolopo just hit me with this instrumental Jazz-Funk/Boogie jam called “Twenty-Second Thoughts” that’s been rotting away on his hard drive since 2005. Besides being Amalia’s hubbie, the tallest man I ever picked up (and threw over my shoulder) & Tokyo Dawn’s parade horse. Peter is also a generous fellow. I suggest you go get that free download over at his Soundcloud page and savour the flavor.

Guilty indeed. Been sleeping way too hard on East Liberty Quarters for real. In case you’re wondering, the trio hailing from Pittsburgh consists of Nice Rec, Grand Ear and the homie Buscrates 16-Bit Ensemble. So I was kinda late discovering their “East Liberty Quarters” EP last month, which is straight funk by the way! You might remember “Lucky Charm” which I featured in “The Future of Funk 2″. Wonderful Modern Funk with a dash of Electro Funk and Hip Hop. Tight drums, great synth work and some funky ass grooves is what you can expect to hear. I also almost missed out on a 7″ record they released last month containing two brand new jams entitled “Holiday” and “Streetlights”. Make sure you pick up the vinyl or digital copy over at their Bandcamp page or try over at Rush Hour.

A very important question we ask ourselves at times is ‘is there room for non-new music’ on the site. Occasionally it does happen, but today I decided why not?! Yes the biggest part of our selection will be brand new contemporary music, but why not post about some incredibly rare 80′s Soul and Boogie music that about to get reissued by the fellas at Now-Again Records? I really couldn’t find a good reason not to post about this “Close Connection” album from a cult New England ensemble called New World Generation. Just a few reason why you’d be smart to buy this on vinyl. The original will set you back a few C-notes if you find it. Secondly this release contains some previously unreleased songs plus alternate version and is now available at the Stones Throw shop for you purchasing pleasure.

Moar Funk!:

After a lot of positive responses to the 1st “The Future of Funk” mix, me and Mr. Speak decided we wanted to do another one. It wasn’t very easy to keep the quality high, but we did our best on the sequal. I’m very pleased to present to you: “The Future of Funk” Pt. 2. Now Modern Funk music is still pretty niche so we’d like to contribute to the cause in our own way, since we’re not musicians ourselves. Big shout out to artists for hitting us up with music and special thanks to Tokyo Dawn Records who are releasing their “The Boogie” Vol. 2 compilation soon! Get ready for a 40 minute ride down the nasty side.

Go listen to it over at Soundcloud or grab the free download..

Just had to do this follow-up post, because I’m digging Amalia‘s album too much. Congratz miss on your debut “Art Slave” album that released today. How stupid fresh is this boogie joint “Welcome To Me”?! It’s actually so good, I’ve listened to it at lease 10 times. And I rarely play a song twice nowadays. Never expected people were still able to make this kind of shit, but Opo and Amalia got the f0nK! Visit Art Slave - Amalia for your digital fetish or hit the Tokyo Dawn shop to buy the CD…not now, but right now!

Miss Amalia has both the Fonk as well as the looks. This beautiful female vocalist from Sweden (by way of Vancouver) is soon to drop her solo album “Art Slave” on Tokyo Dawn Records. Her better half, Opolopo, put some previews online so I wanted to share one with you entitled “All The Funk I Need”. Just got the entire album and it’s straight up bangin’. I’m not even playing around, because whenever Nev hits me back with ‘I didn’t know people still make music this good’ you know it’s serious. This will be one of those albums you won’t forget any time soon. Nice guest productions from Atjazz and last year’s RBMA participant Ad Bourke. So keep your ears on this lady…March 4th!

Now I’ve been a huge fan of eighties Boogie/Funk music for ages and when I noticed that it was steadily making a comeback I was psyched. Earlier this year the ambassador of modern Funk, Dam-Funk told me he had the feeling a whole lot of new artists would be dropping that Future Funk in the years to come. The time is ripe…the fOnK is back. Tokyo Dawn Records just released this bangin’ “The Boogie” compilation, filled with nastyness from B. Bravo, AD Bourke, Opolopo & Amalia, Saturn Never Sleeps and much more. Available HERE digitally now and January 21st on CD.

In Februari we posted a stream of Krystal Klear‘s banger “Tried For Your Love”, which over the last year has gotten lots of airplay by us as on the radio as well as in the clubs. Now many months later the “Tried For Your Love” EP is finally out on All City. This debut solo project is filled with four Boogie bangers including the title track. Hudson Mohawke did a remix which is also on there. This release will not disappoint all lovers of Future Funk! Free download thanks to Pitchfork and available via Rush Hour and the All City shop next week.
