The song “I Should Tell Ya Momma on You” was originally recorded behind the HVW8 Art + Design Gallery in December 2008. This raw video was posted on YouTube and became an instant online phenomenon. Equal parts G-funk, California Soul and Hobo Street, the song features full musical accompaniment created only by Red. The natural funk and flow struck a chord with an international audience representing a true Cali sound. In this era of T-Pain and excess studio production, the video showcased an almost forgotten musical form with no auto-tune or talk-box, only the beating of his chest and the hum of his throat as a bass kick and snare, and highlighted by signature vocals and original rhymes, this was Red – The Man Without The Machine. Get the EP via iTunes and let us know which version is doper…the original one or the Dam-Funk remix? For the full read go to the HVW8 website…one love to Ty G and the HVW8 fam!

Get ready for the latest edition of HVW8 Super Sessions. Another live set at the Art + Design Gallery on the Melrose Strip in Los Angeles. The result is usually unexpected and always amazing.
Last Sunday, Mark de Clive-Lowe set up some keys and an MPC. Chris Bailey sat in on drums. Nia Andrews and Laurnea took turns on vocals. The result was yet another not-to-miss performance at HVW8.
No rehearsals. No set lists. All live. Super Session. DOWNLOAD the whole session HERE, or subscribe for the HVW8 podcast HERE. HVW8 all day!

Hawthorne Headhunters are Stoney Rock (perhaps better known as Black Spade), Ced No and Proh Mic . I can’t remember when I first heard from the HHH, all I know is that we posted their single “She Wanna” a long time ago..so if you slept on that..here is a free download. The second track “Get Up” won’t be on the EP, and will probably be featured on the Kenny Fresh HHH tape. Their upcoming EP will be released on HVW8 on July 27th.

Already these guys are my favourite band of 2008/2009. Computer Jay, J-1 and Dam-Funk took it up another notch with a “more funk than jazz” Super Session recorded live at the HVW8 Art + Design. It was the first time these cats played together as a group and thus Master Blazter was born.
Now I think this hour long improv shit is sicker than chemotherapy! So if you love Dam Funk solo, you’re most definitely going to love the “HVW8 International Podcast, Vol. 2″ (watch the video after the jump). One love to L.A.’s Computer Jay, Ty G and the whole HVW8 fam!

Introducing to you…Computer Jay from the always sunny Los Angeles. A moog freak by nature with a sound derived from dusty old synths but sounding oh so fresh. Greatness in the making I say! Big ups to our friends at HVW8 for some solid info and the footage from the Idyllwild Arts Academy celebrating Black History.
I just talked to Jay on AIM and here’s some additional info for ya’ll. Support good music and buy his single “Distance” with “Epiphany” on the flipside on iTunes!

Big homie Kenny Fresh just hooked us up with some brand new Hawthorne Headhunters music and you gotta love it. For those who don’t know HH…the trio exists of Black Spade, I, CED (or Ced No) and Proh Mic.
The possitively sounding “Never Give Up” – which co-stars vocals from Coultrain - is an unreleased outtake from the same 2007 sessions that the group’s forthcoming debut EP was pulled from. This will be their very first release being put out by HVW8 on June 20th.
The soulful “Get Up!” has been in my top ten ‘on repeat’ tracks for a while now and “PCM” with Dam Funk is epic! Keep your ears out for a Fresh Selects mixtape from the Hunters before their EP drops. This should keep you satisfied untill then.

The Hawthorne Headhunters is a project made up of the individuals; Stoney Rock, Ced No and Proh Mic. The project was conceived in Ced’s Studio in that special place between Long Beach and Los Angeles – Hawthorne, California. The St. Louis natives Ced and Veto, and Seattle transplant, Proh Mic locked it down under the shine of Hollywood Park and created some sounds in the great traditions of musical heavyweight projects such as Funkadelic, Headhunters, Soulquarians, Native Tongues Posse and Bloomfield, Kooper, Stills’ Super Session. Crossing the lines between the Southern influenced tastes of the producer/singer/rapper Stoney Rock, keyboard and studio controller Ced No, fused with the next level northern bounce of rapper/producer Proh Mic, the HH’s is at the crossroads of funk, soul, jazz and hip hop from players already years deep into the game. Look for the album to drop later this year on the new HVW8 records imprint.
