Headhunters On Plug:

For those unaware it all started out when Black Spade moved to the west and met fellow producer Proh Mic at the Do-Over in LA. They hit it off from the bat and soon brought in I,Ced. Ced was living in Hawthorne California at the time thus the Hawthorne Headhunters collective were born. When Coultrain also joined, the group released their debut EP in 2009 with HVW8. Along the way a lot has changed and Proh Mic and Ced decided to go their own way and persue a solo career. Black Spade and Coultrain recorded their “Myriad of Now” album which will be released next year on Plug Research and has lots of elements of hip hop, soul, funk, pop and electronic influences. It speaks on spirituality, sexuality and everything in between. You might remember us posting “Teleport” of of the “If You Were My Baby” single. Next up is their fresh 5-track EP which is available on Myriad of Now - EP - Hawthorne Headhunters as of today.

Coincidence? I think not. This morning I posted I, Ced‘s new bonus track and what do I spy with my little eye some hours later? Some brand new Hawthorne Headhunters shit! Apparently the guys released a new single containing two new tracks. The first being “If You Were My Baby” and on the flipside “Teleport”. Get that ish on If You Were My Baby - Single - Hawthorne Headhunters and watch out for their album to drop via Plug Research later this year.

In 2009 the first mothership landed. Starship 27 was filled with musical crazyness and curated by J1. Shortly after the first compilation album was released, the eclectic Texas label iNsect Records, got in contact with him and talked about a possible follow-up. A few years later “Starship 27 Vol. 2: Take Off” returns with J1 again as it’s curatorial captain, guiding the spacecraft on its musical voyage. On board we find artists such as DaM-FunK, I-Ced, Dibia$e, P.U.D.G.E., Devonwho, House Shoes, Eric Lau, Computer Jay, Ras-G, Blackspade & Coultrain (and more). For those wondering why this unexplained phenomenon is called the Starship 27. J1 replied, “the secret to the name will be revealed on the 3rd installment of the trilogy…next year”. So stay tuned, mark the 29th on your calendar and get ready for some heavyweight beats.

Musically Cali’s Seven Davis Jr. & J.Mitchell remind me a lot of a very raw and uncut version of J’Davey (which is a good thing). Back then their music was only available unmixed and at a low bitrate and I’d really like to hear a more advanced version of “The Landing” from the Black Genius duo (Davis Jr. & JMitchell). But in the meanwhile I’ll settle for a diamond in the ruff. Thanks to I. Ced for hitting us up.

This summer I had the pleasure to meet big man I, Ced at AntVa’s place and he told me about his EP on Record Breakin’. It’s coming out October 19th and the titel is “Another Look @ You”. To get in the mood check out some snippets HERE and be sure to pre-oder the 7″ or get that crack digitally.

Today we visited HVW8 and bumped into Ty and Computer Jay’s girlfriend. Afterwards I-Ced and Black Spade (Hawthorne Headhunters) dropped by and we had a few beers and a whole lot of laughs. Really like this picture I took of them and Anthony Valadez. While he’s listening to and chopping up some Miguel Atwood-Ferguson piano play, I’m writing this. Thank you L.A. for anoher great day!

You might have read that me and Marcelo are currently in L.A. right now and chilling at Venice Beach at the moment with my man Anthony Valadez. First thing we did when we got here was go to the Timeless show with Arthur Verocai and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson show. Eventhough we were tired as f*ck and almost fell asleep (cuz of the jetlag), we enjoyed the show tremendously though.

I took some random shots (check them after the jump) of what we’ve been up to, so I hope you like them. We visited Samiyam at his house and hung out for a bit, whilst sippin’ on some coconut juice with chunks in it. He has some sick ass shirts, which we will might be selling in the near future as well. Heard some dope new stuff of his upcoming album that’s dropping on Brainfeeder and some other remixes he did. Also we met the homie I-Ced, AFTA-1 and the ever so beautiful Nikko Grey. Loved watching her perform live tonight and looking forward to that project she was talking about with AFTA-1.

Hope to be able to post some more stuff on here later this week so stay tuned. Do-Over, Funkmosphere, Low End Theory and more coming up.

Big homie Kenny Fresh just hooked us up with some brand new Hawthorne Headhunters music and you gotta love it. For those who don’t know HH…the trio exists of Black SpadeI, CED (or Ced No) and Proh Mic.

The possitively sounding “Never Give Up” – which co-stars vocals from Coultrain - is an unreleased outtake from the same 2007 sessions that the group’s forthcoming debut EP was pulled from. This will be their very first release being put out by HVW8 on June 20th.

The soulful “Get Up!” has been in my top ten ‘on repeat’ tracks for a while now and “PCM” with Dam Funk is epic! Keep your ears out for a Fresh Selects mixtape from the Hunters before their EP drops. This should keep you satisfied untill then.
