For over a decade the Red Bull Music Academy has given young, upcoming artists a place to develop themselves. Not only do they learn, but a very important part of the RBMA is creating and exposing! What better way to do this than to record a compilation album together with fellow participants as well as more established musicians and sometimes even legends.
Under the name ‘Various Assets’ this has been done several times. These CD’s were never released to the general public and contain unreleased material as well as music that has been released like Flying Lotus his “Tea Leaf Dancers” featuring Andreya Triana. These compilation CD’s were recorded all over the world from Melbourne to Seattle and from Toronto to Barcelona.
We from Moovmnt had never actually heard all of this material and thought it would be a good idea to select our favourites and release it as a mix. Some music you might have heard on our website already, but I can assure you that some of this material has been waiting, hidden in the dust, to come out of your speakers and give you a taste of the wonderful things that are going on at the Red Bull Music Academy.
We tried to keep the mix close to our personal taste and yet it contains a divers array of different kinds of music. Enjoy some tasteful hip hop, nu-soul, future funk, soulful house, electronic music with a dash of dubstep to go out with a bang. Now we’re off to London to soak up some of that RBMA energy, so enjoy this one. We’ll be keeping you updated about what goes on behind the scenes at the Academy, so tune in for some exclusive footage, music, etc.
Here is episode #2 from this 7 part EPK series w/ Shafiq Husayn (SA-RA Creative Partners) shot by Eric Coleman for www.Mochilla.com. This episode features Shafiq talking about the bubblin’ Los Angeles music scene, and the various creative folks that have been a big part in helping to develop this scene to a worldwide audience…THUNDERCAT HOOO!!!!
We’ve been admiring the legend Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner, who plays bass on the entire “Shafiq En’ A-Free-Ka” album, for a minute. You may know Thundercat from his work w/ Erykah Badu, Suicidal Tendencies, SA-RA, and many others. We just wanted to show some Cali love to Plug Research who presents Shafiq’s “En’ A-Free-Ka” album available online HERE!
Wow this shit is the livest ish I’ve heard in a minute man…so damn funky it makes my neck hurt. Taken from a recent ArtDontSleep Jam Session with an amazing array of musicians such as Pharoahe Monch, Shafiq Husayn (SA-RA), Om’Mas Keith (SA-RA), Brook D’leau (J’Davey), Mark De Clive-Lowe, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (Suite for Ma Dukes), Thundercat, and more. It was a jam session of epic proportions and a night to remember. Enjoy a video clip from the jam session and big up to Plug Research & J Kim for this one!
Thanks to Plug Research, we have another podcast for you straight from LA. A few weeks ago they released the Exile edition and now they present the Shafiq Husayn podcast, mixed by Garth Trinidad (of KCRW’s ‘Chocolate City’). This mix offers a great overview of Shafiq’s past, current and future works and features some exclusive/unreleased joints too. All in all tons of music from the likes of SA-RA, Erykah Badu, John Legend, Jill Scott, Pharoahe Monch and many others. Enjoy this FREE mix and be sure to mark that calender on October 6th for Shafiq’s upcoming “Shafiq En’ A-Free-Ka” album via Plug Research. Tracklist after the jump and big ups to J. Kim..
One third of LA’s hottest musical force that is the Sa-Ra Creative Partners, Shafiq heads out alone on a stunning soul/jazz/afro/hip hop and funk infused LP, carefully created and crafted from intense studio sessions and on-going conversations, between like-minded friends and family.
SHAFIQ EN’ A-FREE-KA has been entirely composed with an armoury of outboard gear effects, synthesizers, electric guitars, strings, horns, a lot of modulation. “Hip-hop mastered the beat, but they didn’t do nothing with the changes,” says Shafiq. On the album Shafiq recruits Bilal, Sa-Ra member Om’mas Keith, emcee Count Bass D, London’s rising songstress Fatima, Sa-Ra vocalist Rozzi Daime, and a whole army of musicians and engineers. AYK

Imma freak, he a freak, you a freak…everybody freak! Damn this is definetely gonna be the club banger for July. Gonna push this one so hard even if I have to hand out copies to all the best local DJ’s myself. You all know Mark Pritchard and the genius producer they call Om’Mas Keith (from SA-RA Creative Partners). These two gentleman recorded “Wind It Up” at Red Bull Music Academy’s A Class Of Its Own in cologne 2007. Mike confirmed it will be released as a 12inch on Hyperdub records and allthough the audio quality isn’t that high this stream does keep you on point for the official release which we are all going to buy off course. Not sure about the release date, but probably July-ish. The release will have a Freak Mix and instrumental version on it so you know what it is son.

Here’s another funky leak from the “Various Assets album”. Thanks to RBMA for “We Go Ridin” cuz it’s a sick one.
Sydney shrug aka Dizz1 teams up with mack daddy Om’Mas Keith and Portotante for the only solution for how to avoid Las Vampyras Ramblas. No one’s declining the Ferrari, as we cruise the roads of Montserrat, before heading back to the crib for some g-force grindin’. Everyday…huge ass shout out to Deluge for his swiftness! Thnx to Dizz1 for the mixed version..

After the “Coupé Décalé” LP, Débruit finally hits us with a successor - “Cle Le Bras” – full of dope melody chops, accelerator grooves and savage synths. Daedelus delivers an extra remix for “Pouls”, but for us the nicest two joints are “Echtah” and “Look 22″. Also be sure to give “Gros” a listen, but it takes some time to get into that one and while your at it check out “I’m Goin’ Wit’ You” with Om’Mas Keith and Jamie Woonhere. Visit our friends at Rushhour to buy the EP or get it at iTunes!
