heritage-ep-12-inch-cover

Last year the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble recorded five re-reworkings during one of their many stays in Dublin with Choice Cuts. Hypno-tizing hip-hop, indie, dancepop and afrobeat are the main ingredients for their latest “heritage” EP. They cover Jay Z, Fela, Art Of Noise, Outkast and Madlib & MF Doom. I think the HBE has really outdone themselves this time. My two favs are “Water” and “Spottie”. Grab the latter of the two which was a gift from mark from Choice Cuts. Hurry up and Pre-order this EP over at Rush Hour, cuz this is a limited 12″ release. The artwork kinda reminds me of the that Hidden Strength album, but that’s because of the colours and the pyramid.

amadou-mariam-bullion

Last month I was chilling at the Rushhour shop and was advised to check out this Bullion remix. I got the vinyl out, put the headphones on my ears and was quite surprised to hear a broken Afrobeat remix when I expected some electronic ruffness. After some helpfull comments from you guys, I found out the proper name of the artist, Amadou & Mariam from Mali, and the title, “Ce N’est Pas Bon”. My bad, but as you know the Internet can contain faulty info from time to time. Our source was incorrect and luckily for me you guys set the record straight on this one. That’s what you get with whitelabels. Anyhow…be sure to pick up this incredible record at Rushhour!

The start of 2010 marks the first time Wax Poetics has devoted an entire issue to modern African music. And it all points back to the first Black President, Fela Kuti, who, with drummer Tony Allen, created an Afrobeat shockwave felt throughout the continent. Purchase now! And listen to the issue!

Siji_adesiji

Sijisecond born of twelve children spent much of his early childhood in Lagos and London before coming to the US to further pursue his musical ambitions. His own cultural heritage combined with the political and social movements of the age, exposed young Siji to the insurgent, politicized music of the Afrobeat legends Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Tony Allen as well as the soulful grooves of Marvin Gaye, Al Green, and Otis Redding.

The self-taught piano, percussion and acoustic bass player released an EP. He quickly garnered much respect, admiration and credibility which led to a lucrative worldwide publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music. Siji relocated to New York and performed in renowned venues has worked with a number of producers, but it is his collaboration with Osunlade, who produced music for Musiq Soulchild, Eric Benet, and classic R&B vocalist Patti Labelle, that fostered in Siji a love of production. It was only last year that the “Adé Siji” album dropped on his own label IVY Records and what an album it is. The self-titled sophomore album “Adé Siji”, is a full portrayal of where Siji currently stand as an artist and human being and the experiences that have come to shape his character. It even has some guest collaborations by King Britt and Rich Medina on there. I must admit I kinda slept on this one and rediscovered it recently. For those that love a medley of Jazz Fusion, Soul and Highlife…purchase “Adé Siji” HERE! Thnx to Apple Juice Break for the inspiring post and peep “Yearning For Home” video after the jump.

rmba-taster-2009

Today a legend told his story to a select group of people and we were lucky enough to be there. Tony Allen is undeniably the best Afrobeat drummer ever and he came all the way to Amsterdam for a Red Bull Music Academy masterclass .

Now RBMA was so nice to give us 20 copies of their “Various Assets” (Barcelona 2008) CD’s to give away to our very own Moovmnt visitors. The CD also contains application info for artists interested in signing up for the RMBA 2010 in London. Leave a comment saying why you should get a copy of the Various Assets CD or ADD us to twitter and DM us! You can also send an email to contact@moovmnt.com, but people that leave a comment and our twitter buddies get first dibs!

The Fatima & Dorian Concept joint is from the Various Assets album and we had to hook ya’ll up with some brand new Zap Mama music with Tony Allen and Meshell Ndegeocello from the new “ReCreation” album.
