Few of you have ever heard of Tony Cook, yet some people call Tony’s “On The Floor” (released in ’84) the first house music record. Eventhough the sound of his music seemed to breathe New York, Tony was in fact from Georgia. After two and a half decades he finally releases his “Back To Reality” album on Stones Throw. If you’re into that Modern Funk, you’ll definitely love this album full of unreleased material and rare jams. Now available via Rush Hour or the ST store.
He got his start as James Brown’s drummer (while still a teenager) as soon as he graduated from school. He drummed off and on for James as well as Etta James, all the while recording his own music that sounded nothing like neither artist. Even though he’s released many 7” singles through his own label, none of these songs have ever been on a full album before, They’ve never been performed live either.

“Selective Hearing part 2″ picks up where part 1 left off. Kev Brown and LMNO created this album as a homage to James Brown. Selective Hearing Part 2 was recorded together at the Technicali Lab in Southern California during Kev Brown’s various trips to the West Coast. Entirely produced by Kev Brown, the two also decided that it was only right to have both LMNO and Kev rapping on each track, as opposed to their first album where Kev was only featured on a handful, vocally. Below you can check out the first single “Ya Know”, plus “James Brown” which is my favorite track on the album. You can get it on
now. [Up Above Records]
