29-year-old beatsmith Apollo Brown reps the D and comes with a very recognizable style on his latest “The Reset” album. In 2009 he won the Detroit Red Bull Big Tune Championships and competed in the national finals. Apollo then signed as a producer with the Mello Music Group last December.
Up till now he has released the “Skilled Trade” (2007) and the “Make Do” (2009) Beat Tapes. Those made collaborations possible with Detroiters Finale, Danny Brown and Kam Moye aka Supastition. On “The Reset” he gets some help from Rapper Big Pooh, Black Milk, Declaime, Buff 1, MED, Grap Luva, John Robinson, Kenn Starr, Oddisee and Diamond District.
There’s definitely some nineties influences to be heard on this album, like “Lower The Boom” getting into that Wu-Tang vibe or “Ghetto Soul Music”. I suggest you give this one a listen and in case you want to BUY it head on over to

Spinnerty grew up as a typical Midwestern kid getting shuttled around to soccer practice in the back seat of his parent’s car listening to The Beach Boys, Bruce Springsteen and Phil Collins. Somehow he found his start playing regularly in jazz bands from middle school through to college. “I loved the music,” Spinnerty says, “but sitting under fluorescent lights and playing tunes from sixty years ago seemed to be missing the point of the jazz movement historically. The natural next steps for Spinnerty were to get into the varieties of current music that were derived from jazz and connect the dots to the originators of this inspired genre.
This summer of 2010 Record Breakin’ Music is releasing Spinnerty’s latest production, Just Listen Pt. 1 & 2. “Just Listen Pt. 1” features John Robinson aka Lil’ Sci and on “Just Listen Pt. 2” we have the newcomer Jacqueline Marie on the vocals. Once word got out about these tracks, offers came in to remix the project and Frisco’s very own Funksta B. Bravo came through with a futuristic take on the boom bap vibe of Just Listen Pt. 1. Meanwhile, Dj Limbs put together a funk upbeat remix to Just Listen Pt. 2.
The remixes (released on vinyl as well as digital) will drop late June and I believe the ‘normal’ release is dropping later this month (digital only). To keep ya’ll hungry we’re streaming a low quality version of “Just Listen Pt. 2″ and we got this exclusive “Just Listen” promo mix from Spinnerty as a FREE download. Tracklist is coming up…after the jump.

It’s here! Been waiting for this one for a while now and I have to say it’s nice. DJ Spinna‘s return was highly enticipated by me eversince I met him last year at Black Soil. He was telling me he was coming back with another hiphop album and here it is. I suggest you take a minute to relax, pop the “Sonic Smash” album in your sound system and let it take you there. It has some great featuring artists like Phonte, Yazarah, Shabaam Sahdeeq, John Robinson and Erik Rico on there and “More Colors” featuring Elzi from Slum Village is definetely one of the dopest joints on there. The sample really takes me back to: That’s how it was, this is how it is, you gotta keep it real when you deal with them Brooklyn kids. Oh you know you want to BUY the album via iTunes…so just do so.

J. Rawls and John Robinson (together known as “Jay Are”) offer up their collaborative LP entitled “It’s Jay Are”. The LP is called “The 1960′s Jazz Revolution Again“. Pretty infectious if you ask me, I’m digging it. I’ve gotta say, it’s quite difficult to get your hands on this one since it’s a Japan only release..

Just a quick post for the hell of it. We were at Rushhour a couple of days ago and Nevill and me checked out this Grooveman Spot track we hadn’t heard before. The a-side “2 Things” with John Robinson didn’t really snap our necks, but when we heard the b-side “Down To You” feat. Muhsinah we knew we had to post this one. This 12inch was released late november, but since we don’t buy a whole lot of vinyl I guess we missed this one. Buy this record or the mp3′s and support these artists!

I Am Not for Sale’ is the culmination of over a decade of tireless work from one of Hip Hop’s most slept on MCs and all round renaissance man – John Robinson aka Lil Sci. Many of you will know J.R. from his work with Sol Uprizing or Scienz of Life or from the stellar output of his own Shaman Work label which he runs together with Chris Craft. John’s is also a unique voice you may recognise from a glut of guest apperances for and collaborations with Madlib, Count Bass D, Rawkus Records, MF DOOM, Daedelus, Ammon Contact, Dwight Trible, Jneiro Jarel and Flying Lotus.
Having teased the underground community in the last two years with the widely acclaimed mixtapes ‘The Leak Edition’ Volume 1 & 2 (and subsequent vinyl sampler ‘Leak Edition EP 1’ on Fat City) J.R. is ready to unleash his official debut album release. Production on this project comes from some of the most groundbreaking beatmakers around today namely FLYING LOTUS, JNEIRO JAREL & IG CULTURE, perfectly complimenting John’s poetic flow and forward thinking vision.
