heritage-ep-12-inch-cover

Last year the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble recorded five re-reworkings during one of their many stays in Dublin with Choice Cuts. Hypno-tizing hip-hop, indie, dancepop and afrobeat are the main ingredients for their latest “heritage” EP. They cover Jay Z, Fela, Art Of Noise, Outkast and Madlib & MF Doom. I think the HBE has really outdone themselves this time. My two favs are “Water” and “Spottie”. Grab the latter of the two which was a gift from mark from Choice Cuts. Hurry up and Pre-order this EP over at Rush Hour, cuz this is a limited 12″ release. The artwork kinda reminds me of the that Hidden Strength album, but that’s because of the colours and the pyramid.

OJ_Simpson

OJ Simpson. That’s the name of the album. No bloody gloves. No Ford Broncos. These are some 12 hard-hitting hip-hop tracks featuring Guilty’s inimitable baritone, and an equal number of Madlib’s signature album-as-soundtrack/radio/sideshow arrangements, where the beat & sequence is as important as the rap. This, with a couple no-nonsense guest appearances, some cuts by J.Rocc, and a whole bunch of attitude, makes up one of our favorite projects in a while.

The charisma that Detroit’s heavy hitting MC Guilty Simpson and the Los Angeles based Beat Konducta Madlib share testifies to a musical kinship that is rare in today’s rapper-as-an-accessory marketplace. Going back to Guilty’s first appearance on wax (Jaylib’s “Strapped”–2003), Guilty over a Madlib beat to us is like hearing Guru over Premier circa Daily Operation, or CL over Pete around the time of “Straighten It Out.” Some times, a rapper and a producer just work well together. Album drops May 18. stonesthrow

madlib-young-jazz

Young Jazz Rebels is a Madlib jazz group from the Yesterdays Universe collective. Their debut album “Slave Riot” is an avant-garde free jazz record, a style Madlib has been developing with Young Jazz Rebels since their debut on 2006’s Chrome Children compilation with the track “Nino’s Deed”.

Inspired primarily by independent and experimental jazz vinyl from the late 60s, 70s and 80s, Slave Riot begins and ends with audible vinyl static, and it’s packaged uniform with Madlib’s other new jazz release, Miles Away: CD with heavy-boarded mini-gatefold LP-style package with a “tip-on” gatefold photo and inner sleeve. The double LP is printed with a duo-tone black panther on front & back. The Young Jazz Rebels: Melvin Hampson, Juggy Lewis, Lena Hamilton, Mary Jane, Tyrone Crumb, Lamont Parker, Monk Hughes, Brother Dave L. Produced & Arranged by Madlib.

Again a solid release on Stones Throw and both the vinyl and CD are available via our friends at Rushhour!

jrocc-jaylib

J Rocc (third member of Jaylib so to speak), put together this mixtape of Dilla, Madlib and Jaylib songs, as well as some of their sources, essentially telling the story of this group. Stones Throw had some promo copies of this CD floating around for a while that year, then took the Jaylib section and pressed it on a 45, which was released as the bonus 45 with “Champion Sound”. Both the CD and 45 are long out of stock. The photos were taken by B+ of Madlib in his studio in L.A. and Dilla in his in Detroit.

stalley-autobiography

First of all I’d like to give due props to Osman for gettin’ is hip to Stalley. He sent us a video a few months back and we liked it a lot, but I personally never digged deeper than that. Now my man Deluge recently did and in light of his On-Point interview, I thought it would be only right to get ya’ll hip to Madstalley as well.

This Ohio native hailing from New York dropped his mixtape “MadStalley: The Autobiography” last year, done over re-workings of Madlib beats showcasing his potential. Now 2010 is definitely Stalley’s year to blow. Stalley’s heavily featured on Ski Beatz upcoming “24 Hour Karate School” mixtape (on Dame DashCreative Control label) and is also set to release a project in collaboration with Sa-Ra Creative Partners.

stoney-jackson

In Search of Stoney Jackson is produced entirely by Madlib, longtime friend of Phil Da Agony and extended Strong Arm Steady family. The album’s conception owes a great deal to World Famous Beat Junkie, J.Rocc, who provided the trio with close to 200 of the Madlib the Beat Konducta’s tracks to choose from. Strong Arm Steady had previously rapped over Madlib productions on the Madlib and Talib Kweli Liberation album, but this full-length marks a long-desired collaboration between the four. It’s a hip-hop jam session, with the group acting as the rhythm section for an all-star cast of guest vocalists such as Planet Asia, Guilty Simpson, Evidence, Chase Infinite, and Phonte of Little Brother. (Stones Throw)

This will hit the streets January 26th and is already available as a digital release via the Stones Throw website!
