I’m sure we all haven’t forgotten about what happened in Haiti in January. With the “Notes For Haiti” compilation album, Detroit and L.A. join unite and come together on one album to show love and support. Most songs you might already know, but still well worth the support! Check the official press release…
Moved by the catastrophic earthquake and aftershocks that ravaged the island nation of Haiti, a group of artists is asking the public to remember the difference each of us can make. The project, “Notes for Haiti”, is a way for the collective to thank the public for their support of the island nation to date – and hopefully inspire folks to give more of the help that’s that still needed.
Estimates are that beyond the more than 230,000 Haitians who lost their lives as a result of the earthquakes, another 300,000 were injured and over one million were left homeless.
The album is available digitally in a “pay-what-you-want” format as of Tuesday, June 1, 2010 through the website notesforhaiti.bandcamp.com. All proceeds from album sales and donations are funneled directly to Oxfam America’s ongoing Haiti relief efforts.
The compilation features exclusive content and album material from Karriem Riggins, eLZhi (Slum Village), Blu, Fashawn, Exile, Aloe Blacc, Crown Royale (Buff 1 and DJ Rhettmatic), Invincible, Now On (Mayer Hawthorne, IX Lives, Jackson Perry), 14KT, Houseshoes, Co$$, Sene, AB, Marv Won, Jordan Rockswell, and SlopFunkDust.
The concept behind the “pay-what-you-want” format (used previously by bands such as Radiohead) is that the user can dictate the price paid for the album as a whole, or for each song purchased individually (for as little as $1). The donations are processed directly to Oxfam America through the secure BandCamp-PayPal portal, removing unnecessary overhead or infrastructure costs at the point of sale.
Oxfam is working in multiple locations to provide clean water, sanitation, shelter, seeds and running cash for work programs. Though their public appeal to Haiti has closed (for the time), this project will continue to affect their ongoing efforts on the island.
Detroit natives Niles Heron (Los Angeles) and Sarah Lockridge-Steckel (Boston) executive produced the album with gracious contributions from artists, promoters, managers, and good people nationwide.
Please visit the Notes For Haiti Bandcamp page and give generously! I just donated $5 and I truly hope that you, you and yes you have a heart as well and dig deep into your pockets. We’re only streaming these two bangers at a low bitrate, cuz for only $1 you can BUY the entire album.

Guess there is no need to introduce Blu, Exile & Fashawn. But just wanted to let you know that their on a Europe Tour right now, so if their in your neighbourhood make sure you get some tickets to see the show. They will perform in my hometown Rotterdam this sunday, and as a promo for the tour the homies Sunan and Grandmaster Lee AKA The Superblenders made this mix. Nice way to get warmed up for the show. Jonathan Kim shot this video while he was at sound check for his gig at the Elbo Room in San Francisco with funky worm Exile this past week. As they came into the venue, he saw Exile and Teeko jamming out on their respective equipment, and he was impressed to say the least. Teeko has been making some noise with his group F.A.M.E. as well as recently working with Mark Ronson in NY for his upcoming album. Exile is coming with his “Radio Remix” album so keep an eye out for that. Great to see two artists come together, and create some amazing music together.
Well usually I’m not really into watching long interviews, but Homebase NYC and Hot Mop Films did a pretty decent job on the Off The Wall Sessions. Eventhough the sessions are in front off a wall everytime, it’s still interesting. They got some good quotes out of almost every interview. My personal favorite is the Tiron interview, so thats the one that got embedded, but you can check the other interviews with Shafiq Husayn, Exile, Brittany Bosco, Mike Baker The Bike Maker, and others right here. And if you need to Ketchup on Tiron you can download that here.
We’ve been telling about this new cat aDad for a while now and about how he’s working on a project with L.A.’s funky worm Exile. Another fix called “Sky” is up for grabs so get it while it’s hot. Courtesy of RubyHornet, All Natural Inc & Kenny Fresh.

This year we shot a load of video footage, but due to some circumstances we never got around to editing it and bringing it to ya’ll. Since it’s almost Christmas and the year has almost ended, we had to go out with some gifts in the form of some video’s. We shot an epic video last summer starring Exile & DJ Day which never saw the lights of day. It was shot at the Rooms of Red Bull where we hosted the Beat Battle at the Rooms of Red Bull together with Nalden. The only reason why this video never got properly uploaded, was because Vimeo decided to upload the footage, but kept on messing up the aspect ratio in the progress. We tried everything and eventually gave up all hope. Luckily my buddy Joao Costa (who shot and edited all the footage) came with a solution and managed to properly upload it to Vimeo at last. Thanks to Alex, Damien, Jonathan and Olski for meeting up with us. It was a pleasure and we had fun talkin’ bout the funky worm.
In celebration of Flying Lotus‘s birthday, ArtDontSleep put together another heavy impromptu jam session in the Echo Park area of Los Angeles. This 30 minute take from the jam session features some heavy hitter producers and musicians, including Flying Lotus himself, Exile, Shafiq Husayn (SA-RA), Stephen ‘Thundercat’ Bruner (Erykah Badu, SA-RA), Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (Suite for Ma Dukes), Computer Jay (Master Blazter) and many others.
Also, many of these cats will be featured on the upcoming CMJ Showcase on October 21st at Crash Mansion. Homeboy Deluge will be attending and might keep you guys up to date about what’s poppin’ in NY. Check out the sick line-up on the flyer. From all these musicians to you, enjoy the joint entitled “Happy Birthday, Flying Lotus”.

It’s almost time! So many have been waiting for Fashawn‘s debut album “Boy Meets World”. In case you’ve been living under a rock or just tuned in to this talented MC from Cali…wake the f*ck up! This right here is the new crack to listening to. The whole album has a feel to it..hard to explain, but it makes me feel like I just went back in time to when Hip Hop wasn’t a gimmick or media thing. Pure nineties Hip Hop music for your enjoyment. You’ll see what I’m talking about as soon as you listen to the goosebump evoking “Lupita” with some slick ass guitar play.
Is it just me or does this feel like listening to cats like Pharcyde? Imma just say it man. Hip Hop is back…yeah I said it! Fashawn and Exile (who tears up the mic on “Bo Jackson”) hit the nail on the head with this one. Artists like Aloe Blacc, Evidence, Blu, Co$$ and Planet Asia bless this album with a cameo…BUY THIS ALBUM WHEN IT DROPS!!

Thanks to Plug Research, we have another podcast for you straight from LA. A few weeks ago they released the Exile edition and now they present the Shafiq Husayn podcast, mixed by Garth Trinidad (of KCRW’s ‘Chocolate City’). This mix offers a great overview of Shafiq’s past, current and future works and features some exclusive/unreleased joints too. All in all tons of music from the likes of SA-RA, Erykah Badu, John Legend, Jill Scott, Pharoahe Monch and many others. Enjoy this FREE mix and be sure to mark that calender on October 6th for Shafiq’s upcoming “Shafiq En’ A-Free-Ka” album via Plug Research. Tracklist after the jump and big ups to J. Kim..
Fashawn‘s “Boy Meets World” album is coming closer by the day (Oct. 20th). Lately I’ve been seeing one dope video after another. Not only did Punit Dhesi direct the “Sunny CA” video, he also recently did the “Life As A Shorty” vid and that one is simply amazing. Together with the “Our Way” video with Evidence, I count three consecutive homeruns. Can’t wait for the album to drop and I know ya’ll can’t neither. So in the meantime here is another bone to keep you hungry dogs satisfied for the moment. All day, here is “Sunny CA” west up ya’ll..big up Exile.
