A few weeks ago Mark de Clive-Lowe and Nia Andrews did an amazing live session on Santa Monica’s KCRW. Now one track in the session stood out in particular to me and that was their rendition of Aaliyah’s “More Than A Woman”. I’m usually very picky when it comes to covers, especially covers of songs I love, but they nailed this one. Enjoy, and if you haven’t already go check out the full session over at KCRW.

In memory of Jovan Coleman aka THE DEER better known as J-1 the homie DāM-FunK created this tribute song called “J-1 (Fly On)”. Eventhough we never got the chance to meet J-1, we would like to offer our sincere condolences to his friends and family…R.I.P. J-1! Now this came rather unexpected..Blu & Exile quietly dropped the follow up to their 2007 release “Below The Heavens“. The new album called “Give Me My Flowers While I Can Smell Them“ was recorded back in 2009. Though the project is unmastered/unmixed it might be worth $15 to some. So get that now via Bandcamp.

Guilty indeed. Been sleeping way too hard on East Liberty Quarters for real. In case you’re wondering, the trio hailing from Pittsburgh consists of Nice Rec, Grand Ear and the homie Buscrates 16-Bit Ensemble. So I was kinda late discovering their “East Liberty Quarters” EP last month, which is straight funk by the way! You might remember “Lucky Charm” which I featured in “The Future of Funk 2”. Wonderful Modern Funk with a dash of Electro Funk and Hip Hop. Tight drums, great synth work and some funky ass grooves is what you can expect to hear. I also almost missed out on a 7″ record they released last month containing two brand new jams entitled “Holiday” and “Streetlights”. Make sure you pick up the vinyl or digital copy over at their Bandcamp page or try over at Rush Hour.

Renee Neufville, songstress of the platinum R&B duo Zhane is currently working on her first solo recording venture, titled “Sovereign.” Almost one year ago Renee uploaded some nice treats on her soundcloud including this amazing track “Everything” which features drummer extraodinair Chris “Daddy” Dave on drums.

A very important question we ask ourselves at times is ‘is there room for non-new music’ on the site. Occasionally it does happen, but today I decided why not?! Yes the biggest part of our selection will be brand new contemporary music, but why not post about some incredibly rare 80’s Soul and Boogie music that about to get reissued by the fellas at Now-Again Records? I really couldn’t find a good reason not to post about this “Close Connection” album from a cult New England ensemble called New World Generation. Just a few reason why you’d be smart to buy this on vinyl. The original will set you back a few C-notes if you find it. Secondly this release contains some previously unreleased songs plus alternate version and is now available at the Stones Throw shop for you purchasing pleasure.

Okay I can truly understand why this is Butta! I wasn’t quite sure why it was green though, but after looking it up I found out the name refers to weed/marijuana. Now that we got that out of the way you might ask yourself….who is Green Butter? Well it’s two of Japans sickest producers Budamunk and Mabanua working together on their debut joint-venture album “Get Mad Relax”. My Japanese sucks so the press release wasn’t much use to me. I do know this. Perfect winter time food for your ears. Simply loving this soulful vibe that makes me wanna just chill the f*ck out on the couch. A definite must buy if you ask me, so check if you can purchase this via or try your luck over at Juno. For you vinyl heads there’s gonna be a 7″ coming out with my favorite, “The Smooth Route”, quite soon, so keep an ear out for that one.
