Special Affair
03.06.15

One of our favorite bands from Los Angeles, California is back with another hot one titled “Special Affair“! Consisting of Syd The Kyd, Matt Martians, Patrick Paige, Christopher Allan Smith, Jameel Bruner, and Steve Lacy, The Internet seems to be back in full effect.

They might be one of the most promising bands in the Future Soul genre and it’s clear we need more Syd in our lives and not merely during a special affair. With lyrics like ‘I can read your mind even from behind’ she lets it be known she’s got some serious playette moves.

We think it’s about time for a full-length album, so lets hope Odd Future Records has one slated for later this year. Fingers crossed, but till then bounce to this!

Abraham Blue
30.05.15

Young Abraham Blue from Antwerp, has been on our radar for quite some time and it is no secret we are supporters of this young Belgian vocalist.

Together with British producer PYRMDPLAZA out of the Soulection camp, soon to be label-mate Ibrahim jumped into the Red Bull Studios London. The two chilled out, got into the right mindset and ended up creating the stunning track titled “Whatever You Want“. All that missing is a free download, but for now you’ll have to do with a Soundcloud stream I’m afraid.

Believe it or not Gravez actually has been kind enough to do the artwork for PYRMDPLAZA’s previous releases, including this one.

Jordan Rakei
14.05.15

It’s a while since we’re heard any new music from the master of contemporary Soul music, sir Jordan Rakei. This ultra talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist out of Brisbane has been traveling the world a lot lately and we can’t wait to greet him in out little country.

After Jordan’s second “Groove Curse” release on Soul Has No Tempo, it’s been a little quiet. No worries, for a collaboration with Kiran Kai from South London hit the net yesterday. The track is called “Maya” and is super sultry and just what we were waiting for. Kinda sounds like this was created a while ago, but even an early draft from Jordan sound better than most producers best attempts.

Look out for Jordan Rakei to visit a city near you. It seems he will be touring a lot this Spring and Summer!

Obenewa
10.05.15

At times like these I realize how much talent actually comes out of London. Miss Obenewa is an English singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist and one of many ultra talented soul vocalists that have been making me wonder why I am not visiting their wonderful city more often.

She was classically trained on piano from the age of four and picked up the guitar in her teens. After having contributed on music by Plan B’s music, Obenewa started her own musical journey and released her “Once Upon A Time” EP in 2011. Her music was played on BBC1 Radio and now many years later she’s back with a breathtaking new song entitled “He“.

This particular song was written while she was sick in bed with the flu and later with the help of Raffertie & Walter Ego (Ninja Tune) it came to be her first new single out on Wunderkind.

Choose Your Weapon
05.05.15

I’m sorry for all you Kendrick Lamar and D’Angelo fans out there, but lets get one thing straight. Until now Hiatus Kaiyote has released the best album, entitled “Choose Your Weapon“, of  the freakin’ year…period!

My love for the band from Melbourne has grown over the past few years and in particular for Nai Palm. This lady has captured my heart and touches my soul so deeply I cannot help but cry at times. It is rare that music does this to me. Especially contemporary music, for my true love (as some of you might know) is 70’s Soul and Jazz Fusion. You might also want to check out our previous post on the singles “Breathing Underwater” and “Shaolin Monk Motherfunk” of the incredible Choose Your Weapon album.

Thank god Choose Your Weapon in finally out on Flying Buddha Records. We have picked two of our favorite songs, but really you will want to hear and buy the whole thing. It’s a masterpiece of music that will trigger a heap of emotions!

Ruby Wood
24.04.15

It’s no secret I fall in love with female vocalists on a regular basis. Nai Palm, Alex Isley, Alina Baraz and a lot more. Recently I fell back in love with Ruby Wood of Submotion Orchestra.

She thought today was the perfect day to share a little something something to celebrate the sunny weather. The track “Off My Mind” was produced by Niall Lavelle and written by Ruby Wood. One of the gems that made me fall in love with her amazing voice was “2L84U” of Submotion Orchestra’s ‘Alium’ album. It was released last year on Ninja Tune and In case you weren’t a fan yet, we suggest you head over to Ruby Wood’s Soundcloud page and check this beautiful lady out.

Oh if you hurry, you can snag a limited free download here.

20.04.15

A couple of months ago this mysterious track called “Sunshine” was released by Eclectic Blue. I thought to myself is this the name of a band, a person or a project? Since there was so little info, I kinda forgot about this track.

Fast-forward to now, we know that this soulful piece of good music was written by Jae London. Lee Hogans was responsible for the laidback production and LOVEchild Chris Turner from New York is the responsible for the vocal arrangements and voice. I really love the incredible ‘Saadiq-esque’ delivery and got a super exclusive new track of this project in my inbox yesterday. Seem like ‘The Moment’ to write a little piece on the site.

Now an album is scheduled to release this Summer, but it might take a little longer to drop. Definitely this year though! To clear things up Jae London and Chris Turner are Eclectic Blue. Their first single is up for grabs on iTunes and I suggest you keep your ears out for the album.

17.04.15

Been finding a lot of Soul music this week and of course that’s what Moovmnt has always been about. Music with a Soul element!

Toronto-based soul singer Allie is far from ordinary…this is one thing that is for sure. She’s collaborated with producers such as Elaquent and Sweater Beats and is well on her way to greatness. During the Red Bull Music Academy Bass Camp in Montreal, she recorded a wonderful new song entitled “Remedy” together with Nick Wisdom (1/2 of Potatohead People).

There’s been word of an EP coming out, but no info is available at this point. We at Moovmnt are definitely looking forward to hearing more music from Allie, but for now enjoy this free download.

14.04.15

Not that long ago I came across the name Alex Isley and gave her music a quick listen. Yesterday I re-discovered this creature of pure beauty.

Daughter of Ernie Isley (yes of the Isley Brothers) was destined to be a musical greatness if you ask me. She discovered her passion for performing at an early age and it is no wonder she decided to pursue a career as a musician. Alex Isley majored in Jazz Studies at UCLA and during her college years, she began writing songs, drawing from her own life experiences. She wrote most of what would later become her first self-written and produced debut EP, “The Love/Art Memoirs“, which was released back in 2012. She also collaborated on Brandon Williams’ album and that’s how I rediscovered this pretty songbird.

Her latest song “La Brea” was named after La Brea Ave. (pronounced ‘Luh-BRAY-yuh’) in Los Angeles and was clearly inspired by the lovely ladies of KING. Breathtaking music that will be on Alex’s upcoming “Luxury” project, set to release later this Spring. Purchase the single on iTunes and be amazed…truly!

Those who have been following us for a while, might remember Faraji Heritage Experiment‘s “A/R/T” project from 2012.

The Bandcamp demo was a mere taste of greater things to come and the time for this coming is upon us. The Moroccan composer is back on the set with a brand new project, entitled “Nafsi“, which means soul or being in Swahili. Hussein Ibn Faraji discovered his grandfather’s name was not Arabic, but Swahili. This inspired him to bring together musicians of various backgrounds and have them use swahili nicknames. The same way Herbie Hancock and other Jazz men did back in in the seventies.

It also might be the best fusion of contemporary Jazz-Funk and Soul on one album albums to come out this year! Much respect to Cosmonostro for releasing this April 20th and for giving us the opportunity to premiere this amazing “Ode To Wattstax” track. Pre-orders available here!
