In 2007, UpMyAlley dropped the first volume of their Beatnicks Series featuring upandcoming producers such as fLako, Powell, Rustie, Hubert Daviz and others. Next month volume 3 will be dropping on vinyl through Rushhour and in anticipation of this release Powell (Paris) and UpMyAlley labelhead Dip Some from Cologne will be playing at the “Beatnicks Vol. 3” Pre-Release Party in Amsterdam alongside O.Boogie, Brutuzz and Giographic. In the meantime we received this exclusive leak in the form of Powell’s “AOC Remix” for fellow French producer Tayreeb and make sure not to miss his Live set at the Bitterzoet tomorrow!

So much beautiful music has been coming out of this Timeless project and it doesn’t seem to end. Yet another treat, this time in the form of a FREE mix of Arthur Verocai‘s life work by DJ Nuts. He’s an astute and rigorous historian of Brasil’s vast and varied musical culture. His record collection is legendary; his skills as a DJ are world class. Mochilla commissioned him to make this mix to help people understand the extraordinary legacy of Verocai. Many by now know Verocai’s self-titled album, some even know the more popular compositions and arrangements, but none have dug as hard as Nuts. Years of collecting and a strong friendship with Verocai himself have made this historic mix possible. 78 minutes of all Verocai compositions and arrangements is a dream come true.

For such a mix to be made, only a true Brasilian music aficionado could have created this, and we are honored to be able to share it with you. Without having heard this mix, I already get goosebumps by the sheer anticipation. Check out the full read on Vtech…let’s get nuts!

The time has finally come for Ty to drop his latest “Special Kind of Fool” album on us. The first single “Emotions” (click HERE to purchase) came out last month and contained some big names on the remixes. Waajeed was one of the producers on there, but my person fav was the Dego & Akwasi‘s 2000 Black Remix. We’ve been waiting for this to drop eversince we interviewed Ty last year before his show at the Bitterzoet in Amsterdam. This release is now available via and on CD via the BBE website, so show sum love for this Hip Hop veteran! Songs like “Heart Is Breaking”, “Get 2 The Sky”, “Me” and “Falling” are just incredible and show us that Ty still got it even after being in the game for so long. Definitely a worhty successor to “Closer” and this honestly sounds like a breath of fresh air.

“The Gin Diaries” are about beats, love and Tanqueray. Suff Daddy is a gentleman who knows about the good life: Jamaican Kush, rare soul records and beautiful women make his day. And Suff Daddy ain’t no greedy man. On his new record, he shares his music with friends like Miles Bonny, Fleur Earth, Mariama, Mar and Jim Dunloop. We call “The Gin Diaries” a beat novel, consisting of 13 musical short stories. Some have lyrics and some have not but they are all snaphots of the life of Suff Daddy. “Özdemir” speaks about Suff’s penchant for Turkish breaks, “Vienna” reflects on a recent trip to Vienna and “Konnopke” is giving props to the best currywurst in Berlin. Whereas the songs with Miles, Fleur, Mariama and Mar deal with love, despair and everything in between. MPM

Wonderful Noise…for some a steady supplier of good music and for others a distant record label somewhere in Japan. Since I stumbled onto some upcoming goodies to be released in the near future, I decided to share some of this wonderful noise with you guys. The first being a 12″ by Opensouls featuring Ladi 6 called “Sweetlove” containing a bad ass Mabanua remix (one of Japans sickest upcoming producers). The original was produced by Julien Dyne and what a coincidence…he’s on the next wonderful project as well.

Erik L and Stray team up to form the duo Favorite Flava and it is this group that I was talking about. “LOVE” is the a-side of this upcoming 12″ and Julien Dyne delivers one heck of a remix. Watch for this to drop June 1st and this summer we can expect their “Different Phase” album.

So every blue moon, I get kinda of drunk and feel like making some music.
Here’s the story:
I get home after an awesome night at Low End Theory, then I see my rhodes still hanging in the living room because the 300 lb beast requires more than what is within my own abilities to carry up a flight of stairs to my studio. I felt the urge to make an all rhodes song, so I pseudo jammed on the rhodes and recorded directly into the mobile audio interface I use for my live performances. I didn’t even grab a proper mic to record the percussion–I recorded directly from the shitteous mic on my mac. In which, the percussion consists of me banging and tapping the top of the rhodes body, my car keys, and my snaps. The overall process was just me recording and looping bits into Ableton, then recording more layers, etc. So in total: 1 rhodes (for music and percussion), a pair of car keys, 1 mobile audio interface, 1 mac, 1 drunk girl. So yea, just layers and no edits, but minor EQing to cancel out the hiss from the unbalanced cables I was using. See? Doesn’t take much to make a song.

Listening to the song today, it makes sense that I made this song inebriated because I don’t think I’d make the same key choices if I was sober. Regardless, it has a nice chill vibe so I thought I’d share it with whoever is interested

For the life of me, I can’t remember why I named this song “Almost Free.”

Last year we already informed you this guy Brenk cooks up one killer Gumbo! This Austrian heayweight beatchampion has produced for the likes of Guilty Simpson, MC Eiht and Miles Bonny. He introduces his protegee, the Italian beatmaker Fid Mella, with this cats like Kev Brown and EdO G.

Enough with the name calling already…these cats are just on sum next shit. Melting Pot is starting pre-sale in two weeks, but in the meantime they were so nice to share this with us. A few weeks back Dimlite pleasantly surprised me with his set at the Brainfeeder/RBMA gig in Fabric, London. It was the first time I heard Dimlite sing, and as you might hear in “Sun-Sized Twinkles“ Dimlite tweeked his own voice to complete his new psychedelic beat constructions. Though I am usually more into the soul/hiphop/beat minded side of Dimlite, I can honestly say that Dimlite created his own unique style, and this new “Prismic Tops” album might just be my favourite Dimlite release.
