Raphael Saadiq invokes the spirit of Motown with his new release scheduled for September 16th 2008.

Saadiq cited The Delfonics, The Stylistics, Al Green, The Four Tops and Sam Cooke as inspiration for his new album . “Once I got into this, I got almost stuck ‘in character,’ the character of the old school singers I listened to. But I’m happy and excited it’s done. I put in a lot of work and I feel like I achieved something really great.”

Deviation have been playing 3 of the tracks promo’d from the LP for the last few months and can’t wait to hear the full length. Of all the Motown inspired music and throwback 60s production flying around the charts and the clubs at the moment, it sounds like Saadiq’s tribute is likely to be the most on point and true to the period.

If you are a Raphael Saadiq fan you need to check the 2 sneak previews below. ‘100 Yard Dash’ gonna be a big Deviation tune, sounding like a 2008 Four Tops anthem. Deviation

In a search to bring back the essence of true Atlanta musicianship, Dreamer, The Love Crusader, Tuki and Stago Lee, collectively known as Hollyweerd lead you into a land where rejects and weirdos reign supreme. Joining the new hip-hop movement of internet phenomenons, Hollyweerd has garnered much attention from their ability to create innovative tunes for their eclectic fans online. Brought together by what some might consider divine intervention, these four individuals have a niche for creative lyrics and music that defies the norms of hip-hop. Through songs such as “Weerdo” and “Go hard or Go Home”, Hollyweerd grants listeners a sample of the limitless state of mind they adhere to when it comes to not only the music scene, but life as well.

Influenced by such genres as jazz, rap, techno, rock and alternative, the individualistic creativity that exists within Hollyweerd is undeniable. Self described as new wave, rap, ghetto tech music, their ground-breaking sound resides in unmarked musical territory sure to influence the music community and the world. Meeting in Atlanta, Hollyweerd was formed in mid-November 2007. Creating not only a group, but a brotherhood, Dreamer brings an unorthodox style while Tuki brings wordplay, The Love Crusader brings passion and Stago Lee brings southern sophistication, which culminates into a fresh breath of music with good vibes and funky melodies.

Hollyweerd is creating their own rules in our land and a land where the rain is purple and the flowers are dead. Bringing about change transformation and a new breed of music to the south, Hollyweerd is the new southern comfort.

Samon Kawamura has finished his work on Unfold, his second soloalbum, within a short year Unfold, the successor of Translations (Samon ´s debut-album released on Nesola in the middle of 2007), came into existence. The most obvious difference in comparison with its predecessor is the participation of vocalists/rappers, whose selection nearly seems to follow a concept.
With Madlib´ s brother OH NO and Aloe Blacc two Stonesthrow-artists stood in front of the mic. The contributions of Om’Mas Keith (SA-RA Creative Partners) and the producing MC Ta’Raach fit in the picture as well with regard to the creative backgrounds and interests, the whole thing being rounded out by Kev Brown from the Jazzy Jeff-camp and Laura López Castro.

With Unfold there nearly is a balance between songs with and without vocals. The message being articulated by the lyrical contributions to the songs is basically characterized by passion for the art form and some kind of authentic and serious contemplation on the subject matter.

Seriously good 4 track 12″ from Samiyam on the brilliant Hyperdub label…

Hyperdub’s first US signing, and first hip hop tempo release comes from Flying Lotus sidekick, straight out of LA, Samiyam. With colab releases with Flylo under the name FLYamSAM, a recent selfmade CD ‘Rap Beats’, and a stunning, recent remix for Pattie Blingh for Ramp Recordings, Samiyam is rising fast. All the tunes on the Return E.P. carry Samiyam’s signature synth sound, melancholy melodies, and off-kilter, post-Dilla funk that will make you bump, your brain tingle, while you are simultaneously crying your eyes out. This style is perfected on the track ‘Return’ which has been featured in many a Flylo mix from the last couple of years, and the ultra-lazy grooves of the 8-bit ‘Trick Platform’ which plugs in nicely to recent Hyperdub releases from Quarta 330, Ikonika, Zomby and Rustie. On the flip, ‘Moon Shoes’ and ‘Cheesecake Backslap’, the drums get turned up, and the quantize function thrown out the window. Loose, lop-sided but totally funktional, this release brings a bit of smoggy, toxic West Coast sunshine to stiff old, gloomy UK. Get it on Rushhour. And the lost Luckiest Charm Flylo track.
