Now who would’ve thought I’d be posting about Masta Killa‘s new album? Now “Selling My Soul” is not what I would call an amazing album, but I am thoroughly enjoying this one little cut called “What U See”. Let’s face it…when credit is due, we’re one of the first to give it.

11.12.12

To be honest I skipped the whole “The Retrospection” mixtape curated by Vikter Duplaix. Might have missed out on some of ooh’s and aah’s…or perhaps not. What I’m definitely not missing out on is some brand new material of Bilal‘s upcoming “Love Surreal” album, due February 13th. The first single is, entitled “Back To Love”, is not to be taken lightly and available on Back To Love - Single - Bilal! [Spotted at The Essence],

10.12.12

When we met with Richard last month he told us about The Sure Co. project, consisting of Richard Spaven on drums, Grant Windsor on keys and Neville Malcolm on bass. The trio played a lot together on tour and decided it was time to make a record together. Part of the Jazz:Refreshed “5ive” series the EP is now available on Bandcamp.

Hold up, why didn’t anybody tell me Rapper Big Pooh‘s “Fat Boy Fresh” Vol. 2 was out already?!? Do you remember volume 1 with Nottz and Young RJ on the beats? Established 1980 (just like myself) is a very solid project with Astronote taking credit for almost every production, but one. Below you’ll find streams of two songs I picked out. The first, “The Grown Man Theory”, vaguely reminds me of a DJ Spinna production, which is a good thing! The second, “They Aye Aye”, tells the (superbly narrated) thrilling story of the loyal friend (Jozeemo), the stick up kid (Big Pooh) and the bookie (Fashawn). I’d advise ya’ll to cop this on Fat Boy Fresh, Vol. Two: Est. 1980 - Rapper Big Pooh..

06.12.12

Yesterday Iamnobodi sent us an email containing a whole lot of “Luv”. Nowadays we don’t listen to a lot of beats anymore, but in this case we gladly make an exception. This sounds smooth, sexy and well executed. Great job, hope to hear more like this in 2013!

06.12.12

Next week (Decmber 13th) Jesse Boykins III will be performing at the North Sea Jazz Club in Amsterdam. Especially for this occasion we cooked up a little JB3 ‘Moovmnt Mini Mix’ for ya’ll to kick back to. We carefully selected ten of our favorite songs and managed to squeeze them into a 25 minute treat. Some obvious winners on here as well as the necessary slept on nuggets.

Free downloads are available on Soundcloud and we uploaded this one to Mixcloud too. The Jesse Boykins III event is hosted by us so don’t be shy and come check out the show!

Chris Dave and the DRUMHEDZ, comprised of members Pino Palladino on bass, Kebbi Williams on sax, Isaiah Sharkey/Tim Stewart on guitar, Pookie on keys, and Chris Dave himself on drums; headed out on the road for a Europe tour and promised to give everyone that subscribed to the mailinglist some goodies. They have just announced the release date for their forthcoming mixtape together with this video and a J Dilla “Welcome 2 Detroit” cover. The “DRUMHEDZ” mixtape will be out Tuesday Dec 11 and will definitely be nominated for tape of the year.

East Liberty Quarters is always bringing that top notch Modern Funk. Very soon they will bless the world with their new “The 206” EP out December 10th on Rotating Souls Records. I feel blessed to have received an early white label copy on wax and let me tell you I’m very happy with it! Pre-orders are available on Cross Talk and Juno so act accordingly..

28.11.12

It’s not often we get the chance to introduce music recorded during 1971-1973 that was previously unreleased/unheard. Songwriter Herman Eberitzsch together with guest musicians Hadley Caliman on saxophone & flute, Julia & Maxine Waters & Kenneth Nash (The Pyramids, Herbie Hancock, Julian Priester). These sessions are on that straight psychedelic tip with a soulful Jazz sound. If you’ve never heard of the He3 Project please educate yourself, because you’ve been missing out on some amazing music. The latest “Chapter Three” contains this superb song “Dark Angels” and I also had to add a song of the “Chapter One” album for you guys. Available on Family Groove Records on CD and 2xLP vinyl, but of course also on iTunes.

27.11.12

Pacific Division or better know as Pac Div now have been at it for a while now. I must admit that over the years a lot of songs haven’t been our cup of tea. Let’s face it…artists change, the audience changes, but on their new “GMB” I did manage to find a nice gem. Been bumping “La Cienega Luxor” featuring Big Sik for a minute now and really like the raw hip hop vibe. The deluxe edition is available on GMB (Deluxe Edition) - Pac Div so click if you dig.
